He thinks that the amount of wealth and possessions he has make him a better person, which he tends to show through the way he socializes with other people as well as the way he dresses. An example of his selfishness and arrogance would be to his own wife Daisy. Throughout reading chapter 1, it is evident that Tom doesn’t appreciate Daisy as much, and tends to nullify her existence at all. This is shown when he states he has a mistress at his apartment in New York blatantly showing no care for Daisy at all. He was also not present during the birth of his own daughter which shows his lack of care regarding Daisy as well as his own kid. A color that tends to be used much throughout the chapter is red which can represent several aspects. The color can represent the bond between Daisy and Tom, which is a quite negative and assertive one, but could also represent their relationship as they share unconditional love due to their marriage.

Money is something desired by many because it symbolizes freedom, power, wealth, success, and in some people’s eyes authority over others. A good example of this would be with the character of Tom Buchanan from the 1920s novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. In this book, Tom Buchanan is portrayed as a very arrogant and selfish man that amasses a great amount of wealth. Tom is the kind of person that believes his money puts him above all, and shoes no care or remorse for anyone, no matter who it is. This is depicted through the actions he does against his own wife Daisy. Not only did he refuse to show up to the birth of his very own daughter, but he also blatantly claimed he had mistresses waiting at his New York apartment in front of Daisy. Tom evidently believes that because he is a wealthy man, he has authority over all. This is a great example of the negative change in personality money can have one a person. Although it may not always have a negative outcome, wealth can definitely change someone to a completely different person.

These four places are called East Egg, West Egg, The Valley of Ashes, and New York City. After doing some deeper thinking and research into this novel, I came to find out that these locations represent the area of real life New York City. East and West Egg represent a stretch of two peninsulas above Long Island with high end suburban neighborhoods, where as the valley of ashes represents a corridor of land that separates the eggs from Manhattan in New York City. The East and West Egg are known to be affluent locations with people such as Nick Carraway and Tom Buchanan residing. The East Egg is know to be the location of people with old money, whereas the West Egg is the new East Egg housing residents with new money. Midway to Manhattan lies the valley of ashes. The valley of ashes is a location with very poor air quality that is evidently a very impoverished place, but is known to house all levels of social classes. The location is home to Myrtle and George Wilson, where they have their run down garage. Lastly, New York City seems to be a location that many in the story look to as a place of possibility and opportunity. Nick is often seen there, but finds his experiences rather sad due to the sight of young clerks wasting their moments of night and life. Tom Buchanan also possesses an apartment in New York which is where he headed earlier to meet up with his mistresses.

Many times, the plot of a novel is solely based of where and when the setting is. It also gives the reader background of the ongoing situation based off where and when the novel takes place, and also a feel for the environment revolving around the story which many times can grapple the reader even more. A good example of setting would be from the novel of “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The novel takes place in the roaring 20s, which is very evident by the daily life on many as well as the abundance of pre-depression affluence. The novel takes place in New York City as well as it’s surroundings. I believe this novel is a great example of setting because of the way it divides it into four mainly emphasized location, each representing something different. For example, the east and West Egg represent affluence as they are lodged atop a hill near Long Island, the valley of ashes represents poverty, and New York City represents the land of opportunity where everyone wants to be. In many other instances, symbolism may be used as a color to represent something more negative. Oddly enough, Gatsby has lied about many things throughout the novel up to the point we are at. Although he may have his own reasons of doing so, I believe many can stand with me in speculating why he lies about certain things. When asked about his wealth and how he amassed so much of it, the story Gatsby delivered to Nick was that his family was well off, and that he had inherited all of the money, which is the reason behind his lavish lifestyle. Later in the novel, we come to find out that he was lying about all of that, and that he actually came from a family of poor farmers, which he would later cut off in his life while on his route to success. His actions reveal that he is a very determined man and will do many things to reach goals that he has always wanted to accomplish in his life. The fact that he was born into poverty and was able to work his way up the social and economic ladder says much.

I think what Fitzgerald is trying to get through with the topic of love is to focus one one’s well being in the present, and leave anything that is bothering you or keeps a burden on your mindset in the past. This is very well portrayed through the way the characters express their love for each other. Gatsby does indeed love Daisy, however we come to find that even with the abusive relationship she is in with Tom, she does not seem to show the same amount of love back to him. Daisy does indeed love Tom as a person, although his personality does bring down her appreciation of herself. Although Tom may act this way, it is evident that he appreciates having a wife as beautiful as Daisy, and does not want to completely disregard her. The idea of love in this novel is all over the place, although the main point that is getting across through all this is  to not worry about anything that happened before, and to love who you feel attracted to the most and can be with. It expresses the relationships on many throughout the book, but with much further reading, you are able to infer that there is much more that expands off the thought of love. In the his novel, love portrays leaving one’s past behind, and fully focusing on the happiness and well being of themselves. This includes being with who you love the most, and chasing after what you want in the present. Although this is the case, after thoroughly reviewing the cover, it seems there are several aspects about it that correlate with the story. I believe the face on the cover represents Gatsby. Throughout the story, we know that not many know exactly what Gatsby experienced in his past, although finding out more about Gatsby seems to be an important topic of the story. This may explain the large face on the cover, which takes up a good amount of the cover, but not much detail is seen regarding it. I also noticed what seems to be a green tear drop right under the left eye, which to me seems to represent either the green light or just the color green in general as it plays a big role in the symbolism of the novel. The bright lights at the bottom of the cover could also represent Gatsby's home, as it is stated that his house is very brightly lit during parties.

To many, the cover is used in order to either drag readers in or give introductory background info on a story’s plot. Although both of these aspects may be true, I believe there is always more to a stories cover than many may think. Symbolism is an aspect that plays a big role in every good novel, and I believe that it can always be traced back to a books cover. A good example of this would be from the novel of “The Great Gatsby” by F Scott Fitzgerald. Although at first sight it may seem like the cover on this novel is not much more than a skyline at night with an enlarged face blending in, there is much more to it. The face represents the character of Daisy within the book, and many of the colors and hues used throughout the cover represent several distinct factors within the novel. Although there may be many examples on how symbolism is used throughout a novels cover, I believe this may be one of the best novels to used to depict my point.

This novel consists of the life of Jay Gatsby, a wealthy man living in an upscale area of the New York City vicinity during the 1920s. Gatsby ultimately embodies the American Dream greatly, but how he achieved it is a question that would be lingering throughout most of the story. It’s is found out that he would partake in several illegal activities including bootlegging, and his hard work in those fields lead to his wealth. Gatsby throughout the novel has a very lavish lifestyle with time to enjoy and spend throwing parties, although the relationships he came across would ultimately lead to him being accused of having an affair with Myrtle Wilson, which may have caused his death in the end. Therefore, I believe the first aspect would involve setting. The setting isn’t too major, as is seems to be New York City, a place that has always been a hotspot in the United Staes for at least the past century and will continue to be for the decades to come, with several realistic neighborhoods and areas added to the surrounding. Along with that, I believe the characters that Gatsby would run into during his parties represent several different personalities of people you may come across not only back then, but also in today’s world. Another very major theme that is brought up in the novel is ambition. It seems that most characters, most importantly Jay Gatsby, have an ambition, or a goal to strive for something big. Starting off in a poor family of farmers, Gatsby was able to work his way up to where he is now, a nice lifestyle, living the American Dream.
