After a having a whole semester in this subject, I finally understood the micro elements of language in general. The material scaling from the general parts to a complex one is well ordered but sometimes it feels like it could be better with more practice, such as syntax tree. Personally, thing that went well is the fact that the subject has delivered most of the material clearly with extra insights too. Challenges in this class is to really understand several structure or specific body of language that require practices to really assist students. More practices will be good for some of the complex structure or understanding meaning. Yes, I wish for more homework/practices

After taking this class for a semester, I realized there are lots of aspects that go behind a language. Something as simple as the phrases we use every day are composed of many different aspects such as phonetic, phonology, semantic, and many more. Learning this was very fun and opened my eyes to the reason behind the complexity of a language. Most concepts are easy to understand, but some are challenging. Nevertheless, these challenges deepened my understanding and made me more aware when I am using a certain word or phrase in daily life. Thank you for the class!

This class teach me more deeply, even to the word structure. I thought that "oh, this class just introduce a language like how we usually learn grammar", but it teach me a lot of new things that I even did not realize or know if I didn't learn it here. For example, how a sentences can have different meaning if we highlight each word in the sentence. The material like syntax also make me realize that my grammar are still bad and need improvement. The other challenges that I face is to focus in this class, since this class really full of theory that made me feel stuck and lost. Even though I feel stuck and lost, the practices and assignment has also made me understand more deeper. Learning without practice won't make us understand. Thank you for giving us time to have break and absorb the material.

I initially thought this course would be too overwhelming for me. However, as I learned with everyone and connected the material to my daily experiences, I found it easier to understand. One topic I found both intriguing and challenging was morphology and syntax. I had never realized that a simple adjective like "unlovable" involves multiple layers of word construction to form that one word. Learning about syntax and creating word trees also helped me understand why a sentence might sound correct or incorrect or how it could convey a meaning beyond its literal meaning. I hope the material I’ve learned in this course stays with me for the rest of my life.

Everything is going well so far, except when we learned about syntax which is the hardest yet challenging topic for me to learn in this course. But in the end, the teacher or lecturer provides us with an easy way to learn and lots of practice so that we can progress throughout this concerning topic. As my reflection, I'm hoping to retain what I have learned in this course, and hopefully, all the aspects I've gained will bring a supportive impact for me to pursue things that I want and would like to contribute to the others surrounding me, as in a community or individual.

It is challenging to learn and survive in this course. Most of my obstacles come from a lot of theories within the class. It might be true that LAD also learns tremendous theories similar to this class, but this class is more into how we apply a lot of rules to our understanding. For example, the IPA for a phonetic pattern that organizes the sounds (phonological), morphology-like affixes, syntax like tree structure, or even pragmatics like the meaning according to certain context. However, I like those linguistic elements since I have been aware of how they can help me enhance my grammar skills significantly. Moreover, I also learned and love the statement that linguists are more focused on the meaning, a.k.a descriptive linguistics. Meaning that it allows those who are new to learning a language and do not feel ashamed when they try to use it and make mistakes during the process. This class also has changed my perception regarding the language itself and how toxic are my environment before I went to college. Now, I feel more at ease and gain some insight on how I can develop myself, especially for the language itself a.k.a grammar. Thus, it is true that this class is totally challenging, but I am glad to have been assigned to it since it helps me a lot to expand my insight along with my perspective in viewing the language and English simultaneously.

Suggestions:

From my perspective, it would be best if the class is more focused on the core of the class, which is the linguistics elements. I know that we need to learn all of it since it is "Introduction to Study Language," but it would be more beneficial to learn more about linguistics elements furthermore because it helps us as "English students," especially for those who are new to English.

What went well is the fact that I can understand why language varies from the way it sounds and is structured (alphabetically and syntactically). I enjoy breaking down and building up words and sentences morphologically and syntactically, it makes me able to identify each of their forms (from the smallest one to the biggest one). I also like to identify the ambiguity in sentences where I can elaborate on what understanding/perspective I have.

However, the challenges that I faced will again go back to phonetics (linguistically). I think it takes A LOT of time to practice and learn how sounds are produced, especially to differentiate which symbols make which sounds. Not only that but even though I enjoy breaking down as well as building up words and sentences, those have become a quite challenging task I had to do in this lesson. I still got confused about the classifications of each part of speech or phrase the words should go into, but obviously, it takes time to practice.

Either way, I'm really glad I get to be introduced to the world of linguistics! I used to wonder about language variations in the past, but taking this class gave me a huge knowledge about the world of language. Thank you!!!

I always thought that Linguistic would be simple at first, but turns out it's more complex as we went through the details. Despite some difficulties in creating the Tree Structure of sentences given in our assignments, I enjoy and being in this class because it deepens my knowledge about language, how different accents and words are not the only component of language. Perhaps there a few things that I still found confusing, but so far, the challenges are the one that keep me interested in this lesson. I also found the practices we've done throughout the semester as a very helpful tools to improving and deepening my understanding. It's like the savior of our confusion during the lesson sometimes. Thus, I hope, really really hope that there will be more fun practices in class. But the class is coming to an end huhu... Best of luck for us all in the future hehehe.

What went well:

the practices! all of the practices really work in bridging and applying what we learn especially where we are given the time to think and discuss to actually comprehend and challenges our mind. The scaling also allows us to further utilize the materials and framework in ways that open my eyes about linguistic.

The challenges:

trying to adapt with the scaling and utilize the website to make the syntax tree. Personally, i have a lot of difficulty tying to process the material at first since it really challenges my pre-existing knowledge and when I still feel like I don't understand there's already a new difficulty which made me feel lost, but I still manage, because I'm a chill guy like that. ✨😎

Suggestion:

MORE PRACTICES! I really like the challenge and the way the practices force my brain to work. Furthermore, I would like a mini quiz recap that is only for checking the student understanding so I, the student, know where I am in terms of my understanding. and aheem... coffee machine aheem... would be nice ahemm...

I think what went well throughout this semester was that although there were some challenging parts of this class, there were also some parts that I did enjoy. I also liked how during the class sessions, we didn't simply conduct a lecture for 2 and a half hours, but there were different activities to do like group projects. I'm not a fan of group projects but I didn't hate them in this class. There were moments that were challenging, like the syntax tree and the phonetic sounds and symbols but spending more time to study it helped. duh. I actually enjoyed some of the homework cause it helped me understand the materials more so, more homework is my suggestion.
