Alma returned home thinking of the lesson she had in science. She wants to be a traveler in the future. Her
dream is visiting all the countries of the world on foot. She is particularly interested in continents’ formation
and how they will look like in the future.
 Read the following text and answer the questions below.
About 300 million years ago, Earth was not composed of seven continents. It was one massive supercontinent
called: Pangaea. This was surrounded by a single ocean called: Panthalassa. The theory was
originally put forward by German geologist Alfred Wegener in the early 20th Century. Not many people
believed him. Over the years, some scientists discovered that Wegener was actually correct. Similar fossils
and rocks were found in both the African Continent and the South American Continent suggesting a shared
land where animals could roam from the North Pole to the South Pole. By about 200 million years ago, the
forces that helped form Pangaea caused the super-continent to begin to break apart; such as weathering,
erosion, and Continuous, slow movement of tectonic plates that changes surface features.
Source: www.livescience.com
1- What is the main idea of the text?
2-Find the meaning of the words in bold.
[continent-theory-fossils-weathering-erosion-tectonic plates]
3-How did scientists prove Wegner’s theory?
 Look at the picture and answer the questions with your partner.
- Can you locate Jordan?
- Think of one advantage and disadvantage of Jordan's place in Pangaea.
- If you were in Pangaea, where would you like to live and why?
Discuss the answers with your colleague.
Think of the motion of plates in the future. What would the world look like? Imagine Alma’s trip in the
future and write a short paragraph describing her journey. Share your story with your friend.
