Maine's Blog #1: My First Class in GeMath as a College Student!

Friday, the 20th of August wherein the first subject in the morning is no other than GeMath. How can I even say that my morning is good when GeMath is the first one on my Schedule? Just kidding! It’s just that I’m not a fan of Mathematics, it is my weakness, and every time I heard the word “Mathematics” it makes me super nervous. So as usual, I attended my class, though this is the first time I am able to see my Professor I can’t deny that I feel excited and nervous at the same time. Fast forward, when the Class started I realized that being nervous and shy isn’t going to make me part of the dean's lister hahaha! While learning the nature and characteristics of mathematics I realized that Math isn’t just all about numbers. Math is something that is all around, it can be applied to language, shapes, transformation, and even in science! Math is universal. The time that I focused myself on the discussion I felt so relieved most especially when I can answer correctly the question that Sir Romeo have asked, I feel my cheeks were blushing because of happiness.

As the discussion continues, the fascinating things that I learned in mathematics as a science of patterns are:

First, Math as a Science of Patterns needs logic. We need to use our intellectual ability to understand and to analyze what’s the missing pattern. Just like on the example that Sir Romeo has shown to us, I remember he showed a figure of a house that is rotating clockwise, in that case, we have to understand what was going on onto the figure that was shown.

Second, the number patterns, ever since I was in high school, these number patterns are the hardest. But! when Sir Romeo have said on the presentation “If there is no logic present on the pattern, use addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, squares, cubes, primes and find other operations to be used. Finally, it makes sense to me!

Now, how do these learning experiences connect to real life? When its comes to real life, we face lots of challenges, problems and we don’t have to stick to only one solution. Just like in the number patterns, we have to find new ways to solve our problems. In addition to that is to use our intellectual ability as well, because it will help us to survive, and help most especially our nature and our world. I already know that when our natural resources are being divided, all we have to do is to add and multiply our natural resources.

For the question, did the lesson CHANGE the way how I view Mathematics? I can say, it is, somehow. I said somehow because it’s just the first time that we’re able to discuss in GeMath. However, I am less nervous and scared because the professor, Sir Romeo seems to be careful, not so strict, and a great teacher that’s why I feel a little bit at ease.

While for the struggle in the learning experience, I’m a bit slow when it comes to solving, it takes some time for me to process it all out and I experience that while Sir Romeo was asking a question, and it takes me long enough to be able to figure out the answer but thankfully, I got it right! Because of that struggle, I finally know the only way for me to overcome this is to practice thinking and solving faster!

Maine’s Blog #2: The Discussion that makes me into Mathematics

Our classes start at exactly 7:30 am and I attended the class 5 minutes after the roll call for attendance. How wonderful. Anyway, after the discussion, Sir Romeo re-checked the attendance of the class that’s why everything’s all good for me. Now, when the discussion starts, I am so shocked because in the PowerPoint presentation, there’s a question to be asked to us, students but Sir Romeo didn’t bother to ask us and he continue discussing a new topic which is kind of saddening because I am looking forward on answering more questions. Anywise, while focusing on Sir Romeo’s discussion I found Syllogism very interesting when it comes to using logic and reasoning. Why? It’s because the conclusion must always be indisputable.

I learned so many things today, and everything seems interesting, I never thought Math could be this exciting and mysterious. I am having a hard time on the logic for abstract reasoning, yet I still find it interesting because you really can’t say that your answer is correct unless you prove and defend it right.

All of those learning experiences can help me in real life in terms of, if I am going to compare it to life, I can say that for example, there’s a murdered scene happen and you saw everything but then, when you’re going to tell everything to the police without any proofs, do you think the police will believe you? That’s the lesson, everyone can say anything but not everyone can prove something. If you want others to believe, send proof.

Because of that learnings, experiences, and reflections, this lesson makes me more into Mathematics, and it even lessens my fear because I am proud to myself that I can raise my hand and even answer without hesitation, which shows how much I am attached in this lesson.

Now, let’s talk about struggles. In today’s lesson, I am having difficulty finding the right answer for abstract reasoning, but I am willing to overcome it through practice and dedication.

Maine's Blog #3: One of my favorite topics in Mathematics

In this week's lecture in GeMath, I am not able to attend because of the reason that I am so sick, I couldn’t even get out of bed. Thankfully, now, I am getting better. When I watched the recorded discussion I feel so relieved and happy because the lesson isn’t that hard, I thought it’s going to be hard that I need to double my hard work. While learning the symbolism of Mathematics and fundamental of logic it makes me feel the urge to participate because I like the topic. One of the remarkable lessons that I learned in the discussion is converting the sentences into Mathematical expressions. I like it a lot because it helps me to be cautious and truly understand what the sentence is saying. Just like when I saw the words, total, increase by, with those it automatically means addition, that’s why in mathematical expression, I have to comprehend everything before making the expression.

How can these learning experiences connect to what I already know in real life? It is connected in a way that before we make a decision or an Action, we must be able to think if it’s right or wrong. Just like in logic, and implications we must know the two sentences before we make an answer or the conclusion.

One of my favorite lessons in Mathematics is this weeks topic (symbolism and logic) it is so fun to think about because it is the war between your understanding and your thinking skills, it changes my view in Mathematics because first and foremost the topic is catchy and the because Sir RM is hardworking and great Professor that makes me feel comfortable listening to Math discussions.

When it comes to the struggles, nothing much. Since like what I’ve said, this week’s topic is my favorite and struggles aren’t what I got, only motivation and inspiration matters to me.

Maine’s Blog #4: Truth Table, why are you so hard?

Aaah!! Finally, I can attend the Class in GeMath! I honestly miss this kind of discussion, wherein you have to be alert because if you didn’t pay attention, I promise you, you won’t understand anything (if you’re not that great in Math, like me). This week's discussion is quite hard. But what’s important to me is that I am able to have a correct recitation, yey! The reasoning, logic, and problem solving aren’t that hard but the truth table makes me feel dizzy while listening to Sir Alecha’s discussion. It makes me feel confused about how am I able to know if this is true or false, up until now I am really confused.

Even though I am confused, I am still able to pinpoint some interesting information such as in reasoning, we must first think and comprehend the statements properly so that we can conclude a correct conclusion. In addition to that, what’s interesting is logic, I just wanted to share that before, I hate logic. I truly hate logic, because I know in myself that I am not great at it, and I just don’t know why I’m so slow. But now, logic is very interesting because I don’t know, I just feel like that if something scares me it might be the sign to face it. I like logic now. It’s beautiful because it’s a mystery, and very interesting.

These learning experiences guide me in real life in a way that always reminds me to use my head. Think before doing anything , so that someday I won’t be looking back and regret something. This week's discussion about logic, problem-solving, and reasoning affect my confidence in math, in a good way. I feel motivated to keep going and practicing the topics that aren’t clear. I always wanted to become better every day and because of these topics, it became one of the reasons to push myself. When it comes to my confidence, it's still the same. I’m still confident even though I answered something wrong (it is on the truth table) Sir Alecha was asking the Class, he said “What is the answer, is it true or false?” and I answered false, which is wrong! I feel embarrassed but it’s alright, because experience is the best teacher hehe, at least I try, right?

In terms of struggles, I have been struggling to the truth table but I’m not going to give up! I'm going to practice. I know before next week, my understanding of this topic (truth table) will be better!
