I recently discovered my advisee wants to be addressed as they and also by a different name - not by them talking with me, but via a bio posted for a school play. I also know that their parents are not supportive of this, and I am trying to find a way for them to be addressed by their preferred name in school without their parents knowing about it.

A common thread I noticed in our chat was the ways in which we are navigating the intersection of our own values and autonomy up against the norms of the local community, religious denomination, and administration. This is true of curriculum as well, but seems to be the most visceral and personally hurtful/impactful in DEI spaces; so how do we both lead broader change at our institutions as well as serve our students' needs in a more immediate sphere of influence?

I work in, what I believe to be, a progressive and forward thinking, and accepting environment. Faculty and Administration has a fair representation of the LGBTQIA+ community. Teachers and admin try their best to create safe spaces, to educate the community, including parents on these topics. Even with all this, there is still bullying, and not enough action done to help students who are of the LGBTQIA+ community.

I work in a very accepting environment and students fell comfortable to be real with the adults and their peers. Students will let their advisors know when they are reconsidering about their identity and advisors will help the students to make the announcement to the community. However, these students also make it clear that these "new" identity only happens at school, and cannot be discussed at home. I wonder how school/ teachers can help students to communicate these issue with their parents/ family.
Linda

What's real to me is teacher's genuine desire for students to learn and help them become a version of themselves they're comfortable with; and students ability to connect to other people's experiences, even though sometimes they have a hard time finding a way to do it. I believe in the goodness of the people I work with. What's real about my school is that sometimes administration gets caught up in their plans. They mean well, but are not careful/thoughtful of execution which can often render poor results.
