         <title>Analysis of &quot;A Long Walk to Freedom&quot;</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>As reading "A Long Walk to Freedom" I was thinking about what the theme could be,  When justice and freedom are wanted it will usually be a long pursuit. As his title says "A long walk to freedom" which explains that since a young man he had realized freedom was not given to him.  At first, he longed for freedom for only himself, he slowly realized that he was not the only one who was being held back and rights being taken but also his brothers and sisters needed the freedom he also wanted and yearned for. My evidence for my theme reasoning is, "It was only when I began to learn that my boyhood freedom was an illusion, when I discovered as a young man that my freedom had already been taken from me, that I began to hunger for it." This is the start of his long pursuit of justice and freedom. (623 Nelson Mandela). Mandela became president at the age of 75, this shows how long of a "walk" it took for him to achieve a lot of his goals. </p><p><br/></p><p>Mandela starts this passage off with "I was not born with a hunger to be free" (623 Mandela). He was not meaning the actual feeling of being hungry and wanting to eat. He is saying he was not born wanting freedom because he already thought he had freedom this quote is an example of <strong>connotation</strong>.  </p><p>"A man who takes away another man's freedom is a prisoner of hatred, he is locked behind the bars of prejudice and narrow-mindedness. I am not truly free if I am taking away someone else's freedom, just as surely as I am not free when my freedom is taken from me. The oppressed and oppressor alike are robbed of their humanity." (624 Mandela). This is him explaining his understanding of freedom. He wants all to be free, he does not want to become free just to make someone else not free. This is his <strong>perspective </strong>on the freedom he wants. </p><p><br/></p><p>Nelson Mandela's purpose for writing this piece was to share his personal experience in the fight against apartheid in South Africa. He wanted to write down the struggle for freedom and equality and needed to inspire others to continue fighting with him for justice and natural human rights. </p>]]></description>

         <title>Current Events - Segregation </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Apartheid is segregation in South Africa. According to <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://npr.org">npr.org</a>, "That's according to <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.gao.gov/products/gao-22-104737">a report released Thursday</a> by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO). More than a third of students (about 18.5 million of them) attended a predominantly same-race/ethnicity school during the 2020-21 school year, the report finds. And 14% of students attended schools where almost all of the student body was of a single race/ethnicity." </p><p>"There is clearly still racial division in schools," says Nowicki. She adds that schools with large proportions of Hispanic, Black and American Indian/Alaska Native students – minority groups with higher rates of poverty than white and Asian American students – are also increasing. "What that means is you have large portions of minority children not only attending essentially segregated schools, but schools that have less resources available to them." (Jackie Nowicki).  Now of course you will not find something as segregated as back then but from this reading, I see that they are less segregated by race but more by poverty levels.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>I do not believe we can ever achieve freedom, everyone has a different view of freedom. Some people want "their people"  to be free only. Others want all to be free which is what Mandela wanted, everyone needs to grow up and actually listen to what people have to believe or think and respect their different perspectives. When you are genuinely working for a better future for all and you can other people to help and agree with what you want. You can achieve a lot of good in the world. </p>]]></description>
