STEP 2: Algal Bloom
The nutrient-rich water sparks off the rapid growth of algae in the water. They use up the nutrients in order to reproduce and grow.

STEP 3: Oxygen depletion
The layer of the algae that form blocks sunlight from entering the water source. The oxygen is used up by the overabundant amount of algae in the water body. Other aquatic flora and fauna are starved of oxygen.

STEP 4: Dead zone
All the oxygen in the water is used up. A dead zone forms where the water can no longer support life, not even that of the algae.
