Whenever Ivan's dad beat his chest it was because he was protecting the troop.  Now Ivan has someone to protect.

At the beginning of the story it said that Ivan was never angry. We think that's because he didn't have anyone to protect. Ivan says early in the book that he doesn't get mad, but as he is getting to know Ruby, he becomes mad because he doesn't want her to live in the mall her whole life. He now has a reason to get angry.
