Cartagine è stata fondata dai fenici provenienti da Tiro nel IX secolo a.C.

Il nome Cartagine deriva dal fenicio "quarto hadast" che significa Città Nuova.

Secondo la leggenda Didone fu la fondatrice di Cartagine. 

Approdata infine sulle coste libiche, Didone ottenne dal re Iarba il permesso di stabilirsi lì, prendendo tanto terreno «quanto ne poteva contenere una pelle di bue». 

L'antico soprannome di Cartagine, infatti, era Birsa, che in greco significa "pelle di bue" e in fenicio "rocca". 

Didone scelse una penisola, tagliò astutamente la pelle di toro in tante striscioline e le mise in fila, in modo da delimitare quello che sarebbe stato il futuro territorio della città di Cartagine e riuscì a occupare un terreno di circa ventidue stadi quadrati (uno stadio equivale a circa 185,27 m).

Cartagine fu assediata per 3 anni ed espugnata dal console Scipione Emiliano, figlio adottivo di Scipione l'Africano.

La città venne distrutta, i suoi abitanti furono venduti come schiavi e i suoi territori passarono sotto il dominio diretto di Roma.
