My Aspirations & Goals

One of my Aspirations and Goals is to embody the quote, “be somebody who makes everyone feel like somebody,” in everything I do. I aimed to practice effective communication, open-mindedness, and respect for differing perspectives in every collaborative process for the different devising, design, and playwriting/directing sections. I particularly expressed this value when working on my Playwriting and Directing project. My collaborators and I devised a dark and mysterious story about a child separated from her biological parents. As she grew up, her parents told her that she had a twin who had passed away at birth, but she didn’t remember anything from her childhood. It was almost as if it didn’t happen; it wasn’t real. These questions overwhelmed the protagonist, which guided her exploration to discover what was the truth. I embodied my value in this experiment because I supported every idea my collaborators shared, even when they doubted them. Something I valued from this project was that my collaborators and I had different emphasises. One of my collaborators is a lighting design and technology major, and the other is focused on dance and performance. When choosing who would be who, I mentioned how I thought they should be the protagonists because we merged all of our ideas, which had a similar plot but, in the end, fit theirs the most. They mentioned that they were slightly uncomfortable because acting wasn’t their strength. Keeping my quote in mind, I kindly encouraged them to perform as the protagonists and said they would do an excellent job to feel more confident performing.

My Artistic Process

In the design module of this course, I successfully explored and applied my artistic process in the creation of the Cornell Box. During the process of brainstorming, I made an effort to be as detailed and specific as possible by using textual, visual, and spatial components. In addition to that, I elaborated on a sketch of a rough draft of what I wanted my box to look like. I worked on perfectionism, hard work, giving something the full attention it deserved, writing everything down, and practicing the other processes and components of my design process. We had the opportunity to present our draft to different collaborators. The perspectives and insights of my coworkers and the meanings they gathered from my work were presented. Their interpretations were refreshing and thought-provoking since they allowed me to view my work from a different perspective. These interpretations affected the aesthetics of my final draft and brought to my attention that every artistic choice I make should be made so intentionally. Because of this, I gave extra consideration to the colors I selected, the size of the things I used, and the general placement and arrangement of those objects. In the end, collaborating with others enabled me to produce something I am extremely proud of.

My Influences

One of the categories I explored in my personal statement was my influences. My influences are my family, my current hobbies, and those I grew up with, Ben Platt and Zendaya. My family is the most considerable influence that has motivated my collaborative process this semester and continues encouraging me. My family has always supported me and inspired me to follow my dreams. I am incredibly grateful that they have sponsored me to come to UT to pursue a career in theater, which is what I'm passionate about. For our final devising piece, my collaborators and I chose to portray a narrative where the main character left their home to go on a journey where they experienced highs and lows before finally arriving at their destination. Interestingly, we only came up with the idea once we had created our light, sound, and movement pieces. From the combination of our brainstorming and collaborative processes, I interpreted that the journey the main character went through resembled the process of leaving for college and experiencing the world on your own. I connected it with my own life but consulted with my collaborators for them to share their experiences to create one that encompassed all of ours. For instance, my collaborator suggested we add a second person to hug and then leave somberly to convey the idea of leaving a comfortable place, usually home. I have interpreted the piece we're trying to convey as scary at first (leaving home). I was then finding comfort in cautiously exploring (sailing in the calm waters), and experiencing a bad experience where I built myself back up from (the storm, followed by picking back up the paper boat and myself)—finally, embodying the calmness after the storm when the actress reached the final destination. I agree that these shared experiences portrayed a range of emotions. Still, collaborating with others made me see the experience as something dark that often flashed colors like red and blue. We achieved such by turning off and playing with different colored lights and intensities. From this final product, I could interpret that we explore life daily, and it can be scary, but there are still flashes of light and people that help us appreciate the beauty of life.
