Through out the piece, Dorian Grey's innocence allows him to be gullible in believing everything Lord Henry tells him. Which then ends up affecting Grey's way of thinking and influences many of his actions later on. Having such a young mind set is an easy gateway for all kinds of new theories/ideas to enter the brain.

Hellenic- The definition of Hellenic is classic and it describes the ancient Greek time period. In this story, it adds a sense of elegance and instills the time period that the book takes place in. It gives each character a formal tone that symbolizes the pedestal that Dorian Gray is placed upon in the story.

Mist - This is a motif throughout the book. Mists in the marsh near Pip's house are present each time something bad happens to Pip or when he feels depressed or sad. The mists accompany Pip's misfortunes and major character trait changes while at his childhood home.
Convict - This word is important because the book starts with Pip's meeting with the convict and "his convict" reappears in certain parts of the book.
Blacksmith - Pip's aspirations to become a blacksmith like Joe are contested by his good fortune of going to London to become a gentleman. Pip's regrets for not becoming a blacksmith slowly dissipate over the course of the book. A major conflict appears when Pip meets Estella and he suddenly is shameful of his home and his way of life, which includes the trade of being a blacksmith when he gets older. His apprenticeship to Joe is cut off by his journey to London, where he finds a new "guardian" (Mr. Jaggers) and attempts to find a new profession.
Guilt - Pip's guilt is an important concept in the first part of the book. Pip feels guilty about stealing food for the convict and is unsure whether to tell his sister and Joe or keep it a secret.
