What questions does this book raise for you? What issues are addressed or ignored in the text?

The questions that the book raises for me, the reader, is that the main character in the story, which is "Girl', is always being ignored. Is she considered nothing to the group? Another question that I have is why did the old guy that made magic to aim the hunters spears choose the little boy instead of the girl? The issues that are addressed in the text is that the girl is being told something from the shapes of the world that she just can't figure out. The spirals in the snail shell is telling her a certain language to create. Another issue that was in the text was about a cave lion. When the girl, boy, and old man went to make the magic, they all found a cave lion in the cave. The cave lion jumped at the little boy and took his head and killed him. The lion went right to the old man and clawed him and he slowly died. The girl took out her bow and arrow and aimed it toward the lion. She got his face but he still jumped at her. When he jumped, they both lost control and fell down the cliff of the mountain. Surprisingly, The girl hung on to a tree on the cliff because he basket got stuck on it. It took her a while, but she finally found a way to get out of the tree. Another problem that the girl had to figure out was how to make the magic after the old man died so she can help the hunters.

The characters in the story is the girl, the old man that made the magic in the cave, the little boy (her brother), her mother, the "two men" and the rest of the "others." I do respect the little girl because she was a very brave fighter. When she had to fight another group that came to the island, she put herself together and figured out a way to escape or kill them. I like how her plan was to kill them but they easily died on their own. She did't even have to try! I do respect the old man that went to make magic in the cave. He was old, but apart of the group for a very long time. He was good at his job and always helped the hunters for an easy kill. The girl's brother was very quiet. I do respect him but he never did or say anything in the story before he died. I do respect the girl's mother. She was the typed of mother that cared for all the people and went off to find food for everyone. In the book, she wasn't a supportive mother because in this days she was't even called a mother. The girl called her mother "the person that I came from." The mother was still a nice person and was the type of women that wouldn't make any mistakes. I don't respect the "two men." These men found the little girl hiding up in the tree and started to run at her. These two people were a part of the other group. The girl tried running away, but they kept finding her. I did't like these people because they tried to kill her whole group at camp.

Describe a conflict and identify it as either internal or external. Tell why you chose that label.

One of the conflicts in this story was about the black-men that came to the land. This whole conflict was external because the other people tried to kill the good group. This conflict is also external because they killed the girl's mother. She was hunting with the other group and was coming back to the camp, singing. They didn't realize to be quiet but the girl tried to warn them. The other people jumped out and started to throw spears at them. Two of the other men ran apart from their other group and started to chase the girl and kill her. She managed to run away during an earthquake, but the two other men died. The only bad part was that the girl was trapped in the cave.. I chose this external conflict because it was the climax of the whole story. The girl's group knew their schedule and exactly what they were doing. All of a sudden, these men came and it was a horror scene. They killed many of the girl's people and even had black finger prints on their caves, instead of the red color. This conflict was also external because when the others first arrived, they slowly creeped up to the girl's group on the plains, in the distance. She was looking out at the view when she was on the mountain and saw that the others were killing her people. She had to warn the others, so she ran and ran.. I also chose this conflict because it made me want to read the book even more. This conflict was so out of the blue and surprising that I wanted to no so much more about it.

What patterns do you see emerging in the text? Does the author repeat certain words or phrases? Sentence patterns? Symbols? Images?

Yes, I do see patterns in the text that are repeated throughout the story. The patterns are that in the first part of the story, the girl is looking for food to give to her group and she finds snails. She looks closely at the pattern of the shell and starts to dream. Later in the story, she looks at ferns and sees the spiral pattern and remembers the snails. She also sees an eagle flying in a spiral circle and that also reminds her of the fern and the snail. The girl knew that something was trying to call out do her so she can try to understand. Yes, the author repeats certain words or phrases. I have realized that the author doesn't use names in the story. The author uses she, he, the hunter, etc.. The author does use symbols in the story. He uses many symbols in the dark cave where the group makes magic. The patterns and symbols are different inside each red hand for each person. There are also symbols on the dark cave to represent more marks of the group that she is in. The author also uses a spiral as a symbol. The spiral symbol in the snail, fern, and eagle made the girl find out the first part of the first written language. She learned that you can represent words with other symbols so people can understand.

Do any of the characters do things you feel are wrong?

The characters in the book "The Ghosts of Heaven", some of the characters do something wrong and some characters make the right choice. One of the characters in the book is the minister, Father Escrove. He came to the Valley of Weldon to visit a church called St. Mary's. A person had told him that the community was filled with evil. I do feel that Father Escrove did something wrong throughout the book. The minister was mad that the church didn't have a vicar because the last one died. The minister accused the dead vicar of not supporting and accepting the town. He also never held masses at the church. Father Escrove thinks that he could fix the whole town and "release" the evil. Father Escrove was also very rude to Sir George, the mayor of the town. He was going to stay at the manor for a couple of days. The minister was telling Sir George that everyone in the Valley of Weldon would experience the fear of the will. Father Escrove was treating the maids at Sir Georges manor really bad. He was talking to the maids in a very disrespectful way. I think what Father Escrove did wrong was bad because people should get treated in a good way, even if they are working for someone. Father Escrove shouldn't have accused the old vicar for not caring for the community because he didn't even know the full story of the town because he just arrived there. People will start to think that the minister wants the spot as a vicar so bad and they won't take him seriously.

The new characters in the book are Father Escrove, Anna, Robert, and Sir George. Father Escrove is a priest and came to the Valley of Weldon to save the main town because the vicar died a couple of months ago in the story. Father Escrove is very evil because he thinks bad of everyone and doesn't give the people a chance to talk later in the story. He is very rude to Sir Georges maids and doesn't treat them respectfully. He also got Anna killed later in the story when she got blamed for no reason. in my opinion, Father Escrove is a rude person and he is also very religious. Anna is a young teen that has bright red, long hair. She is kind of shy around people, and has a younger brother named Tom. Tom is a very young boy and I do admire him. He is really nice to people and respects many adults in the story. He saves his sister in the middle of the story when Anna was drowning. Another character named Grace, is very evil in my opinion. Her baby died after it was born and Anna's mother took care of him and gave him medicine. Grace thought that Joan, Anna's mother, was the person that killed her baby but she was the only person that tried to help her. I do not respect Grace because she assumed the wrong idea about Anna's mother. Anna's mother is Joan, and in the beginning of the book she died but the reader will never know why. I respect her because the book makes it seem like she is a very innocent person.

Yes, I do feel that some of the characters did something wrong. Doctor Phillips traps the insane to torture them. People are trapped in cages with no food and little water. Doctor James, the main character thinks that he is trying to kill all of the people to get them out of the society. Doctor James is helping Dexter, a person that is "insane", to help cure him and figure out his problems. Doctor James figured out that he was afraid of spirals, which is mainly the spiral stair case in the building. These stairs lead up to Doctor Phillips' room. I think that Doctor Philips did something wrong. Doctor Philips wanted to cure Dexter by giving him a treatment. Doctor James read up on it and fifty percent of the people that did this treatment died. Doctor James came up with an idea that he was thinking that Doctor Philips wanted to kill him on purpose because he was too much work. I personally think that Doctor Philips shouldn't have taken the chance and new that there was a very big risk of him dying. Delgado is a man that works at the Hospital and he is very mean to Doctor James. I think he did something wrong because he was beating up Dexter for no reason. Delgado knew that Dexter was scared of the spiral stairs and forced him to go up them, but he managed to escape. Delgado shouldn't have forced him because Dexter has the right to not go up the spiral stairs.

There are many conflicts in the part of the book that I am ready. First, Doctor James is scared that Dexter won't go up the spiral stair case and get the treatment that have a very big risk of him dying. This conflict that Doctor James has is internal. This conflict is internal because he is struggling emotionally. He is afraid that Dexter will die and he has fight to make a decision in his own head. Another conflict that happened in the book "The Ghosts of Heaven" was when Delgado had beat Dexter for not going up the spiral steps. Dexter is scared of the spiral stair case because spirals never end and he thinks it slowly leads to the madness of Hell. Dexter only told Doctor James and he trusts him very well. Delgado beat Dexter to the floor and was pushing him up the steps by his clothes. He was also throwing punches at him. This conflict is an external conflict. This was an external conflict because the fight was very physical and not so emotional. Another conflict that happened in the story was another fight involving Dexter. Dexter was being pushed to the ground again and being beat up by Delgado and Doctor Philips this time. This fight was before the other fight that I talked about, which involved Dexter. Verity, Doctor James' adopted daughter, was talking to Dexter when he wasn't supposed to. Doctor Philips found out and sent Delgado to hurt him. This fight was also external because it was a physical fight. Another conflict that happened in the part that I am reading in the book "The Ghosts of Heaven" was the bullying that Verity had to deal with. Verity is being bullied verbally and physically. The girls and boys in her school are being very mean to her but the book doesn't say exactly what the bullies do to her. Another conflict that happened in the story was about Doctor James' wife that died. Dexter keeps telling Doctor James that his dead wife, Caroline, is secretly haunting him in his sleep with horrible dreams. Dexter says that Caroline is hiding deep in the ocean, scared and angry at Doctor James. Dexter said that Caroline was angry because she is mad that Doctor James "replaced" her with Verity. This conflict is external because Doctor James is dealing with this conflict emotionally.

The patterns that I see in the text are how each story connects in some interesting way. Each part of the book is different and all of the stories relate to each other. In the first part of the book, a teen girl found out that some sort of language was trying to speak to her in her head. This story was way back when there was no written language. In the story she finds a bald eagle flying in a spiral like form, a fern that looked like a spiral, and a snail shell when she was searching for food. She knew that something was trying to speak to her, to show her a written language. In the moment, she never realized it was about the spiraled forms until the end of the story. Towards the end of the part, another clan/group came to the island and started killing her people. The groups killed her mom and special people from her group. She, the girl, found black hands in another cave, rather than read hands. She knew that the bad group was in this cave. Soon, the bad group found her but there was an earth quake in the cave. The bad group died, but the cave was blocked. She thought about the spiral forms and figured it out. She now knew that she can make a language that was written with names and symbols. In part two, a girl named Anna lived in a cottage alone with her brother when her mother died. Grace, a girl that lived in the valley near her cottage, hated her and her mother that died because she thought that they both killed her new born baby boy on purpose. The true story is that Anna's mother was a Grace-wife and she and her daughter Anna were trying to help Grace's baby because it was already sick. The pattern that was in the second part of the book that related to the first part of the book was when Grace tried to drown Anna for "killing" her baby boy. Anna was drowning, but she saw a spiral like symbol in the water which used to be the cave a very long time ago.
