Why ESL students?

ESL students proficiency has been on a decline for the last 3 years, at approx. -8.7% proficiency drops on average during that time. Growth has also declined over that time period. These students do not receive enough supports to help them find confidence and success in school. While academic achievement seems to be falling, it is important to note that our ESL population has been on the increase during this time frame.

Potential Hypothesis: Only ESL students who fall under the "critical" lens of need ie. entry level language learners (approx. 22 over 3 grade levels) have been selected to receive full pull out services from our ESL teacher. Meaning that all other ESL students (99 ESL students in total) only see our ESL teacher on a quarterly rotational basis during their elective classes. So those students only get support for 1 quarter of the school year and then it rotates to a new group.

ESL students struggle academically for a variety of reasons. Think about it—the challenges of learning a new language, the many exceptions in the English language, and differences in regional dialects—they’re all overwhelming factors that can frustrate your ESL students.

This frustration can lead to a lack of motivation, or even to an over-dependence on teachers or peers to assist them. Your ESL students who lack the vocabulary that their peers have struggle with concepts like homonyms and synonyms, and can suffer from poor communication in the classroom.

As a result, they may continue to speak more often in their native language, or be fearful of participating and speaking out in a classroom setting—all of which negatively affect their overall learning in the classroom.

Our ESL population is in need of some extra supports. We have an increasing population and our teachers are not properly equipped with the knowledge base to properly serve them and their vast amount of language needs. Currently, our ESL teacher helps teachers modify tasks/assessments/etc because it takes our teachers a very long time to do this themselves, but if they are better equipped and understand the research behind some of the strategies, they can become more efficient and better served with their student population.
