Gruwell was born in California to Stephen Douglas Gruwell (died 2003 in West Covina, California), a former baseball scout for the Anaheim Angels, and Sandra Faye Alley. Her parents divorced when she was still a young girl.

She gave us books written by teenagers that we could relate to, and it was through these books that we began to realize that if we could relate to a little girl who lived on the other side the world, fifty years before we did, we could certainly relate to each other.

The Holocaust survivors in the movie were real survivors and shared their stories with many people including the real Freedom Writers. These individuals include Renee Firestone, Eddie Ilam, Elisabeth Mann, and Gloria Ungar.

Every one of Erin's 150 students graduated from high school and most went on to college. A lot of them were able to obtain scholarships to help get themselves through school. Some used their profits from "The Freedom Writers Diary" book sales to help pay for college. After college, they entered various professions, including the education system.

Manuel Scott has lived in 26 places by age 16. He missed 60-90 days of school he dropped out of school at the age of 14. His father is incarcerated. After an inspiring encounter with a complete stranger in a park who encouraged him to make something more of his life Scott returned to school and his life was changed in Gruwell's English class.

The students started out kind of segregated, they stayed with their own "kind". They eventually learned that none of that mattered!

(The student who is falsely accused of murder in the film became a high school teacher in real life.) Today, they are all part of The Freedom Writers Foundation. Several of them, including Maria Reyes, have traveled around the country speaking about their story.

In 1998 after teaching only for four years Gruwell left Wilson High School and became a distinguished teacher in California University College She then went on to start the freedom writers foundation which aspires to spread the freedom writers method across the country in 2000 she ran for congress at 30 years old she came in third place
