Time and Space
Choose 3 out of these 6 questions to answer and reflect on how it relates to our reading and understanding of Hughes' work.

How do we approach literary texts from different times and cultures to our own?

We always have to do so with an open mind. We need to be open to learning and understanding the time period and the culture. We are not supposed to look at it through our own lenses, as they aren't the ones needed for those literary texts.

How does the meaning and impact of a literary text change over time?

Over time, the meaning of a text can be applied to different scenarios. For example, Hughes' "Freedom's Plow" originally was a message to the black people who were fighting for equal rights and treatment. Now, "Freedom's Plow" can be applied to police brutality and systematic mistreatment of black, indigenous, and other people of color. The impact of the poem doesn't only apply to black people, but now to other minorities, so they can learn and fight alongside everyone else.
How do literary texts reflect, represent, or form a part of cultural practices?

An excellent example of reflecting and representing culture is "Speaks of Rivers". Hughes uses that space to explain his culture and heritage. In this poem, Hughes talks about famous and important rivers in Africa before talking about the Mississippi River. He uses this as a way to show that there is a sense of disconnect from culture, but he still appreciates and acknowledges how important knowing your heritage is. His knowledge of his culture is shaped by America's influence and his ancestors' teachings

Linda Krumholz claims (in "The Ghosts of Slavery: Historical Recovery in Toni Morrison’s Beloved") that finding a voice for the thoughts and experiences of women is central to the "healing," historical recovery theme and structure of the book. According to Krumholz, Morrison’s novel "adapts techniques from modernist novels, such as the fragmentation of the plot and shifting narrative voice, to compel the reader to actively construct an interpretive framework" (109). How does the novel specifically address issues of gender, writing and power? How does the structure and style of the novel give voice to "the thoughts of the women of 124, unspeakable thoughts, unspoken" (Beloved 199)?

~ “…I’ll think about barns burning to the ground” (149).

~ This is memorable to me because it’s the ending of the short story “Barn Burning”. The title is in the quote and it showcases a sense of obsession.

~ “She fell asleep against me. She felt as soft and as light as a kitten” (49).

~ This is memorable because of the stark contrast of the narrator’s wife’s actions to this moment.
