I attended the 'Gender Inequality in Domestic Work' forum held on October 6. The topics covered in the Gender Inequality Forum of Domestic Labor dealt with measures to resolve gender inequality in domestic labor, inequality, women's development, and policy changes.

As the problem of 'productivity and social value evaluation of domestic labor' was raised, the wage struggle and campaign movement for domestic labor spread around Western society. Accordingly, social evaluation and policyization work were carried out in Korea to give meaning to domestic labor and to enhance its 'value'. However, under the theme of paying attention to the emotional value of domestic labor, which cannot be confirmed statistically, seven people gathered from various places to talk and discuss.

Hofstra University emeritus professor Silvia Federici and Vietnam's senior adviser on gender, Pham Tu Hien, participated in a non-face-to-face meeting to discuss wages and gender inequality for domestic work. Silvia Federici said that wages for housework are for women themselves, and that women need to have a choice to make their own decisions about housework. Pham Tu Hien, Vietnam's senior adviser on gender, published data based on various statistics and surveys in Vietnam, saying that women are more responsible for unpaid care in Vietnam, and that this leads to gender inequality.

After listening to the stories of overseas experts, the discussion took place on the spot. The first speaker was KIM Gyoung Rae, CEO of the Gwangju Women's Family Foundation. She argued that the household allowance system is a symbolic policy to spread a culture of respect for the value of household labor and a culture of sharing household labor by establishing a social compensation system for the public value of household labor, and various efforts are needed to introduce and realize the Gwangju-type household allowance system. The second speaker was Garance Sarlat, a UNESCO gender equality project manager. She visited Gwangju by plane from abroad to attend the forum. She said that a project to break away from gender stereotypes about domestic labor and change men's ideas should be carried out to change minds, and that many studies and surveys are being conducted within her UNESCO department.

The third speaker was LEE Hyun Ah, a professor of life sciences at the Korea National University of Broadcasting and Telecommunications. Instead of attending the scene in person, she participated in real-time non-face-to-face. She argued that the recently discussed housekeeping allowance system recognizes the social value of housework and compensates it systematically, and establishing an economic compensation system for housework will serve as an opportunity to evaluate and recognize the productive contribution and role of women who have been responsible for unpaid housework. And the last speaker was JANG Serena, the representative of the Gwangju Women's Association, and she expressed her belief that the policy proposal for realizing the social value of domestic labor is radical and positive due to the low wages of domestic workers and public labor market workers, which are repeated indefinitely. And the discussion was completed by PARK Mijeong, a Gwangju Metropolitan City Council member, who is the chairperson.

In summary, various people at this forum talked about why housekeeping allowances should be introduced, the realization of the social value of housekeeping labor and the problem of housekeeping allowances, whether gender inequality in housekeeping labor in Korea is being resolved, and the payment of housekeeping allowances accompanied by the recognition of social values and gender equality effects of care and housekeeping labor, and various measures were sought to resolve gender inequality in housekeeping labor.

It was a forum that I chose because I wanted to participate in a forum on a topic I was interested in, and it was a beneficial time to learn a lot by listening to various stories from experts. The gender inequality I have felt in my life, especially in domestic work, has been around for quite some time. The hidden contribution of domestic labor is the basis that has made human daily life sustainable to this day. Women were mainly in charge of housework, and nowadays, the perception has changed, and more and more people say that men and women should participate in housework equally, but the reality was still dark.

Although the proportion of men has increased, in order to overcome this reality, where the proportion of women's housework is still high, it is necessary to take it as a common problem not only in Korea but also around the world and find a way to overcome this inequality together. One of the ways is to pay a housekeeping allowance. In the discussion that took place, the story of the housekeeping allowance system was the main topic, so I'm going to think about this. How realistic would it be to provide allowances by realizing the household allowance system? What are the criteria for paying housekeeping allowances?

Recently, Korea is discussing the domestic allowance system. Before implementing the system in earnest, I believe that the subject of allowance payment, the appropriate amount of payment, and the effect of allowance payment should be carefully reviewed and considered. How should we select the targets for allowance payment? Taking our family as an example, my parents are working double-income, and my mother is mainly in charge of housework. However, in other households, there are cases where men mainly do housework, and in some families, as the number of single-person households has recently increased, everything has to be solved by themselves. In consideration of various types of assumptions, it is necessary to appropriately select the recipient of the allowance and review the amount of payment.

The housekeeping allowance system is also important, but I think it is more meaningful to break the mind, or stereotype, as another way to overcome inequality. The mindset of 'women should do housework' has naturally existed in our lives. However, if we break this stereotype and change our minds and think that housework and housework should be done by all family members without sex discrimination, I think the issue of sex discrimination against housework, which is being discussed as old as old times, will be gradually resolved.

It was a meaningful time to attend a forum on the issue of gender discrimination against domestic labor, which I had been interested in before, and think about it like this.
