Objective 8.1

Consultation is a process where a professional in their career field helps to assist another new professional in that same field. Consultation is used as a way to help address a third party problem. One should be aware that consultation has a behavioral model and a clinical model consultation. Behavioral consultations include problem identification, problem analysis, intervention, and evaluation. On the other hand, clinical consultations usually take place when complex problems need to be clarified by an expert while clients are the primary problem source in this consolation. Unlike behavioral consultations, clinical consultations are not as defined and are considered to be a diagnostic model.

Objective 8.1 Continuation

It is imperative to know that the process of consultations involve triadic and indirect relationships, voluntariness, expert and directional relationships, steps of problem solving, and different responsibilities that are shared. While consultations are often individualized that are related to a problem, collaboration is a component of consultation due to consolations involving constant interaction to be effective. In the education field, it is important for educators to consult students because of consolation having benefits that will help students later down the line. Consultation is a great way to successfully assist students with disabilities and it can give students who do not have disabilities more attention by staff if it is needed. Also, in consultation educators are able to receive assistance from consultants if guidance is needed. All in all, everyone should take part in consultation because it is shown to help educators and students in various ways.

Objective 8.2

In every professional field, many new professionals will need mentors or coaches to help guide them in the right direction in their desired career field. In the education field, coaching can be referred to as a process in which experienced professionals use their knowledge to help guide teachers that will improve student outcomes in the end. Coaching has a technical and reform model that is commonly used. The technical model helps to introduce teachers to research based practices and help teachers facilitate problem solving as challenges arise. Also, the cognitive coaching model helps teachers grow as professionals and guide them in ways to be nonjudgmental. Just like consultation, coaching is based upon collaboration and can help improve the practices of teachers overall.

Objective 8.3

Mentoring can be referred to as personal guidance by professional educators to new teachers. The purpose of mentoring is to help improve the quality of new educators and expose them fully to the comments of their profession. Characteristics of mentoring can include new educators being provided expertise, educators being involved in supportive and collaborative relationships, and involved needed active participation from the mentor and mentee. In addition, mentoring helps new teachers integrate new skills into the class and it guides new educators on how to address student needs appropriately.

When a new educator receives a mentor, they will receive a mentor based on their grade level and subject area. Also, mentoring is a professional development that flows continuously while mentors and mentees should stay in constant communication. Constant communication is a major component because without this component, mentoring would not be as effective at all. However, everyone should have a mentor for one’s mentor will lead them into the right direction and open major opportunities for them in their desired career field.

Objective 8.4

With consultation, coaching, and mentoring there are components of these processes that can affect the way these processes may go. These processes can easily go wrong if communication and collaboration is not effective in them. This is so because of these processes being processes where people have to interchangeably work together for a greater outcome. With these processes, there are indirect services that can also hinder the betterment of them. These indirect services can include level of confidentiality, cultural differences, amount of access to services, time planned to collaborate professionally, and understanding the use of professional relationships. This can sometimes hinder the processes of consultation, coaching, and mentoring because of there not always being a balance between the people involved in these relationships. For these processes to work, the people in the relationships will have to find a common ground.
