"Hindus, in their capacity for love,

are indeed hairless Christians, just

as Muslims, in the way they see

God in everything, are bearded

Hindus, and Christians, in their

devotion to God, are hat-wearing

Muslims" (Martel 50).

Pi is accepting and smart because

he wants to be three different

religions, he takes different

things from each religion and uses

them to fulfill his religious journey.

He's smart because when he learns

something he uses it to its full

extent.

"Richard Parker killed without a sound.

Richard Parker's jaw closed on the side

of the hyena's neck. The hyena shook.

It was over/ It was Richard Parker who

calmed me down. It is irony of this story

that the one who scared me witless to

start with was the very same who

brought me peace, purpose, I dare say

even wholeness" (Martel 150, 162).

Pi viewed Richard Parker as death itself.

When Richard Parker killed the hyena,

Pi saw that he was next, death was

sitting at the other end of the boat.

But something stronger than the will

to survive death is the fear of loneliness.

Pi can't and won't be alone and 

abandoned again. Richard Parker is his

rock.

DANGEROUS ANIMAL IN THE ZOO? An arrow

pointed to a small curtain. There were so

many eager, curious hands that pulled at

the curtain that we had to replace it regularly.

Behind it was a mirror" (Martel 31).

"The key aim is to diminish an animal's flight

distance, which is the minimum distance at

which an animal wants to keep a perveived

enemy/ our tools for diminishing flight

distance are the knowledge we have of an

animal, the food and shelter we provide, the

protection we afford" (Martel 39, 40)

This is one of the themes because the

majority of the book is humans interacting

with animals. Trying to live in harmony with

them. The relationship between animals and

humans is a very tricky one. If an animal or

person over steps someone is going to get

hurt.

of madness that moves them in

strange, sometimes inexplicable

ways. This madness can be saving;

it is part and parcel of the ability to

adapt. Without it, no species would

survive" (Martel 41).

"I must say a word about fear. It is

life's only true opponent. Only fear

can defeat life. It is a clever, treacherous

adversary, how well I know. It has no

decency, respects no law or convention,

shows no mercy. it goes for your weakest

spot, which it finds with unerring ease. It

begins in your mind, always" (Martel 161).

In the middle of the book when he was

on the life boat his will to live was

diminishing quickly, but was brought back.

Seeing that Richard Parker could be tamed

and Pi didn't have to kill him. The will to

survive is driven by the will to live for

something important. The only thing that

can stop Pi is himself. He is the only

obstacle in the way of succeeding.
