<title>Little is known about Marco’s early years except that he probably grew up in Venice. He was age 15 or 16 when his father and uncle returned to meet him and learned that the pope, Clement IV, had recently died.Marco Polo was 17 or 18 when he began his journey from Venice to the farthest reaches of the Mongol empire.</title>

<title>The Polos were likely shrewd, alert, and courageous; they traded with the Middle East and acquired considerable wealth and prestige. Marco Polo’s father, Niccolò, and uncle, Maffeo, continued this legacy.</title>

<title>The elder Polos were probably employed in some technical capacity. Once and very abruptly, a glimpse in Il milione is obtained of them acting as military advisers during the siege of «Saianfu» , a city that was finally taken, according to Marco, thanks to some «great mangonels» built according to the Polos’ specifications.</title>

<title>Returning to Acre, they were given proper credentials, and two friars were assigned to accompany them, though they abandoned the Polos shortly after the expedition resumed. <title>Sometime around 1292 , a Mongol princess was to be sent to Persia to become the consort of Arghun Khan, and the Polos offered to accompany her. Marco wrote that Kublai had been unwilling to let them go but finally granted permission. The princess, with some 600 courtiers and sailors, and the Polos boarded 14 ships, which left the port of Quanzhou and sailed southward.
