Myelination refers to the process in which white matter increases in the brain. Myelination allows for a more efficient transfer of nerve impulses throughout the brain. This process is important, particularly during adolescence, because it is a crucial factor in the development of motor skills and overall central nervous system. Adolescents require acute function of their motor abilities in order to fully develop into adulthood. Without proper growth of this brain function, adolescents can risk major inhibitions in both their physical and mental maturation that would impact their quality of life. Delayed motor skill development can also cause major changes in behavior among the adolescent youth. This can potentially affect the academic climate of the school in a negative way if not addressed. Pruning is the process in the brain in which excess neurons are eliminated in order to increase the efficiency of neural transmission. During this process, grey matter gradually decreases throughout the teenage years. Myelination and Pruning work together to develop optimal and healthy brain function in a maturing adolescent. Unlike Pruning, the process of Neurogenesis is the creation of new brain cells throughout the central nervous system. Neurogenesis is important in brain development during the adolescent years because it largely responsible for the growth and function of the entire central nervous system. The other neurological processes would not be possible without the brain’s ability to create new brain cells. Myelination, Pruning, and Neurogenesis are all important factors in what is known as Neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is the ability for the brain to make synaptic connections, particularly in regards to learning or forming new experiences. Myelination helps to facilitate Neuroplasticity through its ability to transfer nerve impulses more efficiently in the brain. This transmission makes it easier for the brain to make the synaptic connections necessary to retain information. Pruning aids in the efficiency of neural transmission by cleansing the brain of excess neurons that would slow the process. Without Pruning, the brain would not be able to make a sufficient amount of synaptic connections required to learn properly and process new experiences or events due to delayed neural transmission. Neurogenesis is also important in the process of Neuroplasticity because of its ability to form new brain cells. In order for optimal function of the central nervous system to even be possible, the brain has to produce enough cells that will ultimately be responsible for making the synaptic connections that facilitate learning, especially in the average adolescent body.

I plan on implementing Kahoot into lesson plans on review days.

I think that the decline of American creativity and innovation is largely due to the obsession and attachment to current technology. Most individuals today are fixated on their devices or gadgets and are not required to think creatively on a daily basis. This is not to say that technology is the root issue. I believe that if used constructively, technology can be quite useful in facilitating creativity. The current climate of pop culture in the United States, however, encourages a society that values the idea of consumerism over innovation. I think that this issue becomes more evident in the younger generations of Americans as well.

I think that creativity is very important to incorporate in the classroom. Students learn best when they are in an environment that challenges and expands their thinking. This most often occurs when students are given the encouragement to be innovative in their learning. My goal as a future educator is to provide the opportunity for my students to access their own creativity. My lesson plans will allow for students to think critically rather than memorize information. I also plan on including group work into my lessons. I believe that students learn better and are far more creative when they put their minds together and brainstorm ideas. Many of the activities will be discussion-based given that the subject is social studies. Students will be able to make connections from the readings and lessons to real-world events or scenarios. Showing students how the content relates to the world around them is crucial in stimulating the mind and sparking inspiration for discussion or debate. Having healthy, productive discussions in class is necessary for growth of knowledge and creativity. Students will learn how to develop their opinions and defend them, as well as learn how to accept differing perspectives. This can help with innovation by providing them with the necessary skills that promote creativity.

One instruction strategy that I chose is cooperative learning. This is a strategy that emphasizes cooperation and teamwork over competition by allowing the students to work in groups. I prefer this method because it teaches students how to collaborate with one another. For example, if the students were given a scenario or problem to solve in groups, they would have to work together to find a solution or complete the task. Another method I chose is debates and discussions. This strategy requires the students to present a formal oral discussion on a topic that they would be responsible for researching. I chose this method because discussion-based lessons or activities are a great way to actively engage students in the learning. It also teaches students how to form their own opinions on certain topics and defend their stances. For example, in a debate students would have to decide whether they are for or against prayer in school. They will need to research information on the topic that is in alignment with their stance and present it to the class. The last method I chose is exploratory activities. This strategy permits the exploration of a topic related to the curriculum by each individual student. For example, students would be given a research assignment on a topic of their choice. They will have to translate their findings into a presentation for the class. I chose this method because students tend to perform better academically when they are learning about a topic that interests them.
