For example, converting from 54 centimeters to hectometers, move the decimal point to the left once, making 5.4 Decimeters. Move the decimal point 3 more places to the left and you have hectometers. Move the decimal point to the right when going to smaller units, like from decimeters to millimeters... and there you all have it with the metric system. ;)
