Baldwin sugar coated a lot of things to the point where he even defended the actions of the countrymen that he views as oppressive. On the other hand, Coates was writing to his own son so he really was straightforward about everything and he did not lie. Baldwin calls the "countrymen" meaning White America "innocent" because they don't see the damage that they are doing. They don't understand how it is to live as a person of color. With that being said, they aren't going to change the way the do things (oppress, discriminate, and etc) until they understand how much damage they have caused before, now, and for generations to come.
