Multicultural Literacy Reading Group by MACARAH MORGAN

After today's discussion, what are some ways mentors can build off of or utilize multicultural books during mentoring sessions to promote growth in the mentees' English skills, knowledge and socio-emotional growth? What are activities that are suited for virtual and/or in-person mentoring sessions that can support the lesson and theme of the book? How can mentors foster discussion between themselves and their mentees?

Multicultural books can be used for extended reading sessions by mentors/mentees that can be a starting point for a variety of educational objectives:
1. practicing foundational skills: learning and practicing new vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing activities, critical inquiry, and discussion-based activities;
2. literature and ethics: developing ethical awareness and social justice awareness by exploring a diversity of personal stories, histories, and global contexts, ways of being in the world, values, attitudes, and beliefs;
3. windows and mirrors: empowering students to see themselves reflected in different stories that can provide pathways towards self-love and self-affirmation, grappling with the complexities of one's identity, making sense of belonging to different communities and sharing the world with other people, etc.
