Within this module, we are going to explore the theme of friendship in different picture books and evaluate how the theme this author chose can affect a child, and/or children’s literature in general.

Firstly,  A Sick Day For Amos McGee by Philip C. Stead is a great book example for the theme of friendship. The plot is an older man who goes to the zoo everyday and plays with the animals individually. One day, he woke up and felt sick so he did not visit his friends at the zoo. This created worry in the animal friends and they decided to pay him a visit to check on him, only to end up playing instead his house instead of the zoo. The author chose this theme to give children an example of how friendship works. For example, the animals were worried about their friend because they did something they wouldn’t normally do, so they decided to check on him. This is such a great lesson for children to learn because it teaches them to recognize when something may be wrong with their friend, or friendship. 


Another picture book that relates to the theme of friendship is My friend Rabbit by Eric Rohmann. Completely different than the other book I just described, this book is about an arrogant rabbit that always gets into trouble, but needs help from friends to get his toy plane down from a tree he got it caught in. The friends (animals) decided to help him get his plane and ended up tumbling down doing so. But in the end, rabbit got his plane. The author explored this theme to show a different side of friendship. Children can learn from this that there will be times when you don’t want to help someone for certain reasons, but need to. It also allows them to see that there are times when you need to do something for someone, with no benefit in the end for yourself. This can be physical objects, or things you have just learned (like the things you can learn from within picture books).

Friendship bracelets
-Friendship bracelets are well known to everyone, especially children. They symbolized the relationship between the friends and express their appreciation to them. The artist that made them may be someone random (bought from a store), or some children simply make them for their friends. Friendship bracelets seem to be saying that whoever is giving/ receiving them is important to the other’s life.
