"And Loisel, looking five years older, declared, 'We must take steps to replace that piece of jewelry," (205). Although having something of great expense can bring joy, it can also bring problems and great responsibilities. In this text Loisel is frantically searching for the lost necklace. She did not realize the responsibility that came with having an expensive piece of jewelry. So, when she lost it she is experiencing stress that is making her look five years older, as stated in the quote.

"And she answered,"It's embarassing not to have a jewel or a gem-- nothing to wear on my dress .I'll look like a pauper.I'd almost rather not go to the party."
This quote represents how the Necklace stands for greed. Instead of being thankful for her expensive dress, Mme Loisel wants more and more. She needs an expensive piece of jewelery to go with her dress.

What the Necklace Mean

The Necklace is easily the most obvious and most meaningful symbol in the story. The Necklace stands for greed and selfishness. As well as responsibility and honesty. The Necklace is first introduced into the story when Mme Loisel is worried about looking poor at a party. She asks her friend if she can borrow an expensive piece of jewelery for the party. When the necklace is first introduced into the story it symbolizes greed as Mme Loisel is not content with her expensive dress and she wants more. As they leave the party, Mme Loisel and her husband hop swiftly into a cab and back to their apartment. That is when she realizes that the necklace is gone.
At this point in the story, the necklace shifts from standing for greed and selfishness, to responsibility and dishonesty. Mme Loisel has to much pride to come out and tell her friend, Mme Forestier, that she has lost her necklace. She decides that she would devote the next ten years of her life to paying back the new necklace. She was not responsible and careful with the necklace. Ten years later, as her life had gone into ruins; she coincidentally met Mme Forestier at a park. After a long chat, Mme Loisel thought it would be funny to tell her about the necklace. After she had told her story, Mme Forestier tells her that the necklace was fake. Mme Loisel's dishonesty caused her to waste a lot of her life. The necklace is an amazing symbol and the way the author puts a crazy twist at the end, sums up the ironic and twisted story of The Necklace.
