1/What is the connection?

The students will link chronological order essays to real-life experiences by sharing specific instances where they described a sequence of events. For example, they can recall a personal experience, a historical event, or the process of completing a task. This helps them understand how events are arranged in order of time to create a clear and logical flow in writing.

2/How can the connection be shown?

To introduce the topic of "Chronological Order Essay," ask students to share a personal experience by answering guiding questions such as:

Can you describe a memorable event in your life step by step?

What are the key moments that happened first, next, and last?

3/When will you show the connection?

The connection should be introduced at the beginning of the lesson to help students understand how sequencing events is important. Additionally, the connection can be reinforced by discussing real-world examples, such as historical events, scientific processes, or even daily routines.

4/How will you apply the connection?

The students will organize their ideas in a logical time sequence and create an outline for a chronological essay. They will use transition words like first, next, then, after that, and finally to guide their readers through the sequence of events.

Example 1: My First Day at High School

(Introduction) + (Event 1 → Event 2 → Event 3 → Conclusion)
"My first day at high school was both exciting and nerve-wracking. First, I woke up early, put on my new uniform, and packed my bag. Next, I arrived at school, met my classmates, and listened to the principal’s welcome speech. Then, we attended our first class, where the teacher introduced us to the subject and gave us a short activity. After that, I made new friends during lunch, which made me feel more comfortable. Finally, the bell rang, and I went home feeling happy and excited for the next day."

Example 2: How I Learned to Ride a Bike

(Introduction) + (Step 1 → Step 2 → Step 3 → Conclusion)
"Learning to ride a bike was not easy, but it was a fun experience. First, my dad helped me pick out a bike with training wheels. Next, he taught me how to balance by making me practice pedaling slowly. Then, he removed the training wheels, and I kept falling, but I didn’t give up. After a few days of practice, I finally rode the bike without falling. Finally, I could ride around the neighborhood on my own, feeling proud and free."

Personal narrative

Mr. Yan

What is the connection?

Students will connect writing a personal narrative to the act of sharing their own experiences. By telling their own stories, they naturally engage in the process of personal storytelling, which serves as the foundation for writing a compelling narrative.

How can the connection be shown?

First, share a personal story(it should be interesting or fun). I told my students about the time I was late to the airport but because I bought tickets from VietJet(they are famous for delaying flights), I got lucky and ended up on the plane.

Then ask students to share their own funny or interesting stories.

When will you show the connection?

Can be shown before or after sharing the stories.

How will you apply the connection?

By sharing their stories, students already create their first drafts but in their heads. They also provide multiple examples to other students.
