Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex. There have been many deaths because of discrimination such as George Floyd May 25 by the white police officer Chauvin in Minneapolis Minnesota, Breonna Taylor March 13 by Jonathan Mattingly, Brett Hankison in Louisville Kentucky, James Scurlock May 30th by a white bar owner Jacob Gardner in Omaha Nebraska, and many more. The treatment given by white police officers is unequal examples such as jail time and even death penalties show this. For example, the gap between black and white people in jail is 39,400 more black people than white people. There have been protests on this subject since June but have slowly dialed down. Weapons have been being used by police against protesters such as tear gas, rubber bullets, blast balls, and pepper spray. These weapons are also used regularly against black people.

My name is George Floyd. I am a 42-year-old black male. I live in Minneapolis Minnesota. It is May 25, 2020, I am out to buy some cigarettes at the convenience store. I am no criminal but I have no money to buy these cigars with so I am using counterfeit money. After I buy the cigarettes and walk out police cars start showing up. Soon after the police cars show up officer Chauvin has me pinned to the ground with his knee on my neck. It has been 17 minutes since the first police car showed up and I am now lying on the ground unconscious. After 8 minutes and 46 seconds of officer Chauvins knee on my neck, he finally removes it. He had held his knee on my neck for a whole minute and 20 seconds after I became unconscious. There were people around shouting at him and videoing the scene they said that he was killing me which he was and ended up accomplishing.

Police bias and brutality against Black people creates a 96 out of 100,000 chance of getting harmed by police officers for black males this is not ok. Police bias can cloud officers' judgment on how to treat situations and it can escalate the situation. Because of this Black people have a 32% rate to be a victim of police brutality, the fatality rate is 2.8 times higher among black people than whites, and black victims are 14% more likely to be unarmed than white and Hispanic people. More effects of police brutality are protests. There have been many protests all over the country and a big part of that was in D.C. with freedom plaza. On account of police brutality, the Stanford paper did a study on police stops between white and black people and found some interesting things such as the biggest difference of stops was in Madison where 39 out of 100 black people got pulled over and only 11 out of 100 white people did. The smallest difference was by 1 with black people being 1 higher. Here are 2 quotes from black people's perspective about police brutality, Quote by Paul Kersey “ If the police don’t defend us, maybe we ought to do it ourselves.”Quote by Rachel Cargle “ White feelings should never be held in higher regard than black lives.”. These stats and quotes just show how prominent and awful police brutality is.

D. Problem and solution

The main problem with police brutality is police not following the laws against it and not having any consequences. These are 2 laws about police brutality, Title 18 of the United States code states that it is illegal to intentionally harm or keep citizens from expressing their rights under the constitution such as freedom of speech. Title 6 of the civil rights act states it is illegal for local and state police to discriminate against a citizen-based on their ethnicity, nationality, gender, and/or religious affiliation. It is necessary that the police who have committed those laws get arrested to show that it is not ok to do what they are doing and that the police aren’t above the law. One solution to this issue that has already been put in motion is Physiologists researching biased police stops and the use of force. This helps them be able to change the amount of discretion the police have during searches and interrogations; they do this by training the police differently. Body cameras are another attempt at a solution but only two states require body cameras so far Nevada and South Carolina more states are starting to enforce it though like Connecticut, California, and Florida. If you want more information go to the BLM website there are many actions you can take by signing up or they have social media accounts.
