September 1938, that when it all went south. On page 14, Yenek states, "I was twelve years old when the wall began". One morning, as Yenek was walking to school and it was closed. Closed to Jews. Yenek, whimpered all the way back home. Depressed, Yenek strolls home to complain to his mother. This is important because this shows that this was the start of what would happen in a few more days.

The year 1941, was the time period of World Word II. On January 1st, 1941, it was revealed by accounting of the next night's bombing of London that the churches made by Christopher Wren "Old Bailey", "The Guildhall", and 8 other churches were destroyed or badly damaged. Some the churches were rebuilt and others weren't. The cause of the bombs? The Germans. During the year September 7, 1940 to May 11, 1941, was The Blitz. The Blitz was a German bombing campaign against the United Kingdom. On Wikipedia.org it states that"Over 40,000 civilians were killed, 139,000 were injured, and 2 million house damage and destroyed. Overall, 60 percent of London was destroyed and damage." This is important because it shows that all around the world, there was still chaos.

Winter 1942, the Nazis began taking Jews away to work in Krakow's factories. All were taken in truckloads and never came back. When Yenek goes back into his flats, his neighbor began scream. Something was happening in the building. On page 27, it states "We listened as the screams and crashes got closer." Nazis had intruded flats and emptied out everything valuable. This shows the process of how the Nazis began to take over.

It was February 2021, studies showed that temperatures in North America had decreased a bunch. The cold was caused by a southern migration of the polar vortex. Temperatures fell as much as 25-50 Fahrenheit below average as far south as the Gulf Coast. The polar vortex to spill south into the Upper Midwest and Great Plains. Many regions within the SOuthern Plains, broke or nearly reached record-low temperatures not seen in decaded. On wikipedia.org is states, "At least 278 people were killed directly or indirectly by severe cold". This shows that even in North American, there was people suffering.

On January 1st, 1944, in Pasadena, California, the USC Trojans beat the Washington Huskies 29-0 in the Rose Bowl. It was the only Rose Bowl game with teams from the same conference (Pacific Coast). The Washington Huskies had won all 4 of their games in a short season without any PCC matchups, as the other 5 programs in the northern Division were on hiatus in 1943 and 1944. USC backup quarterback Jim Hardy threw 3 touchdowns passes to lead the Trojans to their 7th Rose Bowl victory and 8th championship. "For the first time, the Rose Bowl was broadcast on the radio abroad to all American servicemen, with General Eisenhower in Western Europe allowing all troops who were not on the front lines to tune in and listen." This shows that although in 1944 the Jews were having a horrible time, in California, everyone was having a blast.

Yenek was being transported somewhere with all the others. It felt like forever to get to their destination. Everytime Yenek would doze off, he would still be in that cold, old train with a dead man on his shoulder. A they finally got to their destination, they were ordered to to undress and rush to the showers. Another passenger had informed that the showerheads would shoot out gas so once Yenek enter the rooms he quickly goes to the back of the room then decided to just let the gas end his life. On page 129 Yenek shouts, "'Go on!'" I yelled at the showerhead. "'Go on, do it! I dare you'" I laughed again. From this quote you can see that Yenek believes that he shouldn't be alive anymore and he should just end it all. This is important because this shows that the Nazis tormented Yenek so much that he wants to die.

In the mid 1943s, the Allies drew a new plan to invade Japan. the plan was to be from the south and from the southeast through the Philippines and through Micronesia. While soldiers from the Philippines disrupted Japan's communication, the Marshalls and the Carolines to Mariana, would not only offer the possibility of drawing the Japanese into anaval showdown, but also win the bases for heavy air raids on Japan's mainland. On December 15, U.S troops landed at Arawe on the southwestern coast of New Britain, which really distracted Japan. By January 16, 1944, the airship at Cape Gloucester had been captured and defense lines were set up. On Britannica.com it states, "What remained of the Japanese garrison on Bougainville was no longer capable of fighting, though it did not surrender until the end of the war." This shows that even in war, there's still hope and bravery.

The prisoner next to Yenek has died and a boy maybe 2 years older than him started talking to him. They later became friends. The boy's name was Fred, Fred and Yenek would do everything together. They would eat together, work, sleep, and were basically inseparable. Suddenly, Fred felt sick. Fred couldn't get up from bed and was forcefully dragged to role call by Yenek. Since Fred was late to role call, he was hanged and put up to displayed for all the new prisoneers to see. "'This man says he cannot work,'" a Nazi told us. No, I thought. No he can. He's a good worker. He's just sick. Work maeks you free, the Nazi told us. But If you cannot work--" (162-163). After Fred was hanged, at night Yenek said a kaddish for Fred and made another vow to never forget. This is important because it shows that Yenek can't even make a friend because they'll eventually be gone.

1 year has passed, Yenek is 14 years old now. Yenek was put to work building new barracks for the never-ceasing truckloads and trainloads of Jews brought to Plaszow everyday. Later on, he was escorted to clean out where his apartment used to be. He shoved open the big metal door and hopped onto the rooftop. "I went into the pigeon coop, fighting back all the memories of my mother and father" (71). While Yenek was in the pigeon coop, his father coat was still there! He wasn't allowed to take anything back, so he picked up and put it on. Yenek digged through the pockets and there was money in there! Of course! Yenek's mother had sown into money into their pockets to avoid being robbed completely. Could this be Yenek's boost? This is important because this scene shows that with this money he can possible buy food from other prisoners secretly and survive longer.

The Jews were taken to a death camp. The showers rained with water and they got new clothes. The next day, the Jews were being tattooed. "Prisoner B-3087" that what was carved into Yenek's arm. "B-3087. That was who I was to them. Not Yenek Gruener, son of Oskar and Mina. No Yenek Gruener of 20 Krakusa Street, Podgorze, Krakow. Not Yenek Gruener who loved books and science and American movies" (131-132). From this quote you can tell the sadness from his thoughts. Imagine being known as a number and not your birth name. One of the fellow Jew was 13, he was finally a man. Yenek volunteered for his bar mitzvah and realized that he missed his birthday. He was 15 maybe 16 years old now. 2 Years had passed.. This is important because this shows that because of all the abuse the Nazis were putting on Yenek, he couldn't tell what year it was.

On page 63, the first page of chapter nine it states, "I had known this day would come." From this quote you tell from just going to work, Yenek is fearing. Fearing that he would be taken away and sent far far away. Once he had arrived at his destination, he spots uncle Moshe! Yenek questions if any of his family members are here as well, but no. They are all gone. His parents, his aunts, and cousins, they're all gone. This shows that this is the beginning of this hell hole. Only uncle Moshe and Yenek are the only survivors.

Since Yenek is a veteran prisoner, he knows that he should lie about his age. Yenek tries to warn this one family that they should state that their son is 18 years old, but clueless about the affect, they tell the truth and are separated. "I stood as tall as I could. "' Eighteen,'" I lied. "'Are you healthy?'" "'As an ox,'" I lied again." This is important because since Yenek has lied, he won't be killed and will just be working at the death camp. Since it's been years since he last saw his family alive, he is now adapted to this horrible lifestyle.

Another third of the country's homes had no running water , two-fifths of houses couldn't flush their toilets, and three-fifths didn't have central heating. On fdrlibrary.org, it states that, "On Hyde Park, New York that included Springwood, its outbuildings, and the rose garden was opened to the public a year later." This shows that even while resting in peace, Roosevelt cannot actually rest in peace.

On page 146, it states, "After a few months at Birkenau, we were told Auschwitz needed workers. Since Auschwitz was nearby, a sister camp to Birkenau, they marched us down the road and across the fields to get there." In this quote Yanek and other prisoners are being told that they are going to work at a camp, named Aushcwitz. They were not moved there by transportation, but they were forced to march there and work after working at Birkenau for a few months. This scene is important because it adds on to the story about how Nazis were to move people or things just to meet there own needs, without any care for the prisoners or Yanek. For Yanek, moving to another camp just means more suffering and working for more Nazis, but it will also show how we won't give up on himself and will keep going until he is free.

His efforts and personal views were major factors in the development of psychiatry, psychotherapy, and psychoanalysis in the United States during the century’s first half. Brill left the Eastern European village of his childhood at the age of 14 and came, alone and without resources, to the United States and New York City to seek his fortune. By the time he was 29, he had graduated from the Columbia University College of Physician and Surgeons and then trained in psychiatry and neurology.

Ala Gertner was born in Bedzin, Poland on March 12, 1912. On October 28, 1940 Gerter was ordered to report to the train station where she was deported to a Nazi labor camp. In 1941, Gertner was allowed to return home. She strted working in various local workshops and offices. She and Bernhard Holtz were married in the Sosnowiec Ghetto of Środula on may 22, 1943. On January 5, 1945 four women were hanged in Auschwitz. Other sources say that on January 6, 1945 was the date of the execution. This was the last public hanging at Auschwitz. Two weeks later, the camp was evacuated. On Wikipedia.org, it states "Gerter left no known survivors or family, but her 28 letters to a camp friend."

The death march is what the Nazis had the Jews do instead of taking a train to the next concentration camp. They had been moved this time because of the war. Because of the torture, Yenek becomes suicidal and wishes that one of these bombs the planes are dropping lands on all of them. They were given a piece of bread to last then 5 days. Day and night the soldiers had been marching with cozy jackets, and snow boots. As for the Jews were left with our wooden shoes, no socks, and our used stripped pajamas. When the sky went dark, the soldiers set up their camp and went to sleep, and we were outside sleeping in the snow. In the book it states that, "Snow was our only source of water, our only way to stay alive and not turn into musclemen." This shows that the Nazi soldiers would starve the Jews and not give them all water to stay alive.
