This article was written by a black teacher who writes about his experiences teaching to students of color. I learned that many of us have been raised to be fearful of people who have been raised in hard circumstances, because they are perceived to be more threatening. In this article, Edmin talks about the importance of dismantling the fear we may have towards some group of kids. In his experience, he began his career by being very cold with them, but eventually he learned that these students need us to we warm and loving with them. This is going to impact my teaching by taking care to smile, be kind, and even vulnerable with my students. This was impactful to me because I had a fear in the past about giving students "too much" freedom. This helped change my perspective about how students can be much more engaged when they are in charge of their own learning, and when they help each other learn. This completely shifted my perspective of what the purpose of education is. To paraphrase my favorite part, Meier says that the classroom is a model for what type of citizens we want to build in the future. With this in mind, I want my students to understand that their voice matters in the classroom, and what they say and do can have an influence over what happens in our class. This is something that I currently apply to my students as a yoga teacher, but this helped me understand what it looks like in a classroom. I think this is important because it helps create more independent learners. I also think it's valuable for students to experiment with how they learn, so by the time they are done with high school they know how they learn best, and are efficient at being in charge of their own learning. I am going to take time in my class to give them their own goals, and to follow up with them one-on-one during open artmaking time.
