Under the Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai

The image is part of a series of prints titled, “Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji” which was made by Hokusai between 1830 and 1833. He discovered Western prints that came to Japan by way of the Dutch trade and became interested in Dutch artworks. His inspiration is represented through the linear perspective of the Mount Fuji in the background which is made tiny by the use of this perspective. Mount Fuji doesn’t dominate the frame; instead the foreground is filled with this massive cresting wave whose ends resemble snow falling. Observing the waves movement, it follows the Japanese style of reading – From right to left, appears to be swallowing up the mountain and depicts moments before crashing down onto the three fishing boats. The use of repeating colors - Royal blues and whites of the ocean, which is also seen on the mountain and the light tan colors of the boats and sky – creates a pattern from dark to light. The entire image feels very calm, there are no aggressive colors such as red, just soothing colors, almost like the artist wants to make us feel in peace.

Bibliography:

Khan Academy.
The Fallen Angel of Alexandre Cabanel

This painting shows the angel has both arms raised and his fingers of his two hands interlocked hiding most of his face. This depicts the masculinity but at the same time the weakness and vulnerability. Hands locked and intertwined in a squeezing motion as if that is his to release all his anger (nah hahah), wings are still intact [though the stories say that they were ripped off], angles in the back ground are happy and joyous, it shows the contrast of these who remained in heaven and he who was casted out. In relation the rock in the middle ground shows that he is now on earth. being casted out he now lives outside the sphere of heaven.

During the module, I've come to learn that there are more technical aspect in paintings. Its not simply picturing an image in your head and then expressing it on canvas. You have to think deeper, find a story to tell and be smart about the methods and techniques to use. The lines, shadowing even down to the colors of the painting. taking all of the elements into account to be able to complete an artwork.

Taking into account its elements, techniques, background of the painter and even the materials or medium used.

Not simply enjoying its aesthetic, nor just understanding the meaning behind it, but really looking, observing, taking into account each and every element of the painting.
and I thank the module for opening my eyes and giving me a new perspective on paintings.

Id like to show what I've learend through my interpretation on Alexandere Cabael's, The Fallen Angel seen above.
