Chamberlain reported to the police that she saw dingo taking her child from their tent, when she discovered she was missing one morning. A search was conducted but Azaria was not found, only her jumpsuit that had been bloodstain around the neck. The police believed that Lindy had slit her child's throat in the family car. However, later the "blood" in the car turned out to be sound-deadening compound(noise cancelling spray) for cars. The prosecution won the case by claiming that the Chamberlains simulated a dingo attack by killing the child then rubbing her clothes in the dirt and hiding them outside their camp. This outlandish story was backed up by James Cameron. James Cameron was the expert witness in the case, but he was involved in a court case in London which was overturned because his evidence was proved wrong. The prosecution also was backed by the public's opinion on Lindy. They believed that because she was to cold and stoic during the trials that she was guilty. She made appeals, but they were dismissed. However, in the Chamberlain's tent there was blood on the walls of the tent. Scientists Dr. Andrew Scott stated that the spray mark of the blood was consistent a dingo carrying a bleeding baby. Canine hairs were also found in the tent and on Azaria's jumpsuit. After Azaria's matinee jacket, which the police said didn't exist, was found buried next to a dingo lair near Uluru along with the blood and canine hairs, the evidence pointed to a dingo. On February 7, 1986, 5 days after the jacket was found, Chamberlain was released from jail.
