Definition:
Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. It can also be described as a group of complex neurodevelopment disorders characterized by repetitive and characteristic patterns of behavior and difficulties with social communication and interaction.
Symptoms:
Autism's core symptoms are social communication challenges, and restricted, repetitive behaviors. In autism these symptoms begin in early childhood (though they may go unrecognized), persist, and interfere with daily living. Many people with autism have sensory issues. These typically involve over- or under- sensitivities to sounds, lights, touch, tastes, smells, pain, and other stimuli. Autism is also associated with high rates of certain physical and mental health conditions. Every child or adult with autism has unique strengths and challenges, so there is no one size fits all approach to autism treatment and intervention. Each autism intervention or treatment plan should be tailored to address the person's specific needs. Intervention can involve behavioral treatments, medicines, or both. Many people with autism have additional medical conditions such as sleep disturbance, seizures, and gastrointestinal (GI) distress. Addressing these conditions can improve attention, learning, and related behaviors.
Behavioral treatments and interventions can include:

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)

Early Start Denver Model (ESDM)

Floortime

Occupational Therapy (OT)

Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT)

Relationship Development Intervention (RDI)

Speech Therapy

TEACCH

Verbal Behavior

Possible Risk Factors:

Being male (males are 4 times more likely to be autistic than females)

Coming from a family with autistic members (autism seems to run in families, but is not contagious)

Having older parents (according to multiple studies, older parents are more likely to have autistic children than younger parents)

Being exposed to specific 🤬 during Utero (certain 🤬, specifically Valproate and Thalidomide, when taken by a pregnant mother, seem to raise the likelihood of autism)

Being born early and/or at a low weight (There are many reasons why a child might be born prematurely, they include maternal issues ranging from malnutrition and injury to gestational diabetes, these issues can cause a wide range of problems, and autism is one of them)

Spontaneous Mutation (researchers are finding that many people with autism do, in fact, have mutations in their DNA- - but these are not clearly linked to any particular pattern or cause)

Being a white person from a Major Metropolitan Area (In November 2015, the CDC released a report which included a wide range of information about the prevalence of autism in various groups, among other things the report cited a higher level of autism in white people from Major Metropolitan Area)

Causes:
The exact cause or causes of autism are still unclear, and some theories have sparked controversy, such as the role of vaccinations or the importance of dietary factors such as gluten. While genetic causes of autism are still being investigated, other studies suggested that certain environmental exposures in the womb may increase the chances of a child developing autism. Sex hormones, medications, certain metals such as lead, pesticides, and chemicals used to make plastic hard or pliable have long been suspected of having a role in autism.
How Many Suffer:

About 1 in 59 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) according to estimates from CDC's Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network.

ASD is reported to occur in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups.

ASD is about 4 times more common among boys than among girls.

Studies in Asia, Europe, and North America have identified individuals with ASD with an average prevalence of between 1% and 2%.

About 1 in 6 children in the United States had a developmental disability in 2006-2008, ranging from mild disabilities such as speech and language impairments to serious developmental disabilities, such as intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, and autism.

Interesting Facts:

Certain geographical areas of the country have much higher rates of autism, such as California, Texas, North Carolina, and Utah...Some scientists have suggested that higher amounts of environmental toxins in these areas may explain the relatively high rates of autism.

Eugen Bleuler (1857-1939), a Swiss psychiatrist, first termed "autism" but applied it to adult schizophrenia. In 1943, the term was redefined by Leo Kanner (1894-1981) who dissociated autism from Schizophrenia to create the modern understanding of the disorder.

Autism is more common than childhood cancer, diabetes, and 🤬 combined.

From the Greek autos meaning "self", autism literally means "alone".

Sources:

https://www.autismspeaks.org/treatments

https://www.verywellhealth.com/risk-factors-for-autism-259982

https://www.autismspeaks.org/what-autism

http://www.center4research.org/causes-autism-kids-diagnosed/

https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/data.html

https://www.factretriever.com/autism-facts

https://www.autismspeaks.org/what-are-symptoms-autism

https://www.ninds.nih.gov/Disorders/Patient-Caregiver-Education/Fact-Sheets/Autism-Spectrum-Disorder-Fact-Sheet
