The shot I liked the most about my scene is the mobile phone shot with the wine spillage in the background on the table. I like this because it looks unique as I haven't seen spillage in such a natural and artistic way before which also looks good on camera.

Furthermore the shot that I found to have the most difficulty was the talking scene with the housemate, because I tried many different angles and experimented with it. I ended up liking the side shot of Matthew with Jayden in the background because you can see the dead expression in Matthews face with Jayden's reaction in the background, then I also followed this up with close ups on each of their faces to capture in depth details of their reactions and dialogue to each other. I did this because I wanted to try something different to the original plan of over the shoulder shots. Which I think worked well as it was different to my original plan but it also came out as decent shots to film, which I was ultimately happy with the outcome of these shots.

As a director, filming day went extremly well because we stuck to the shooting schedule and everything worked out flawlessly within the time frame.

I sat down my actors and crew instantly and talked them through every shot and what will happen throughout shooting, this will give everyone clarity and understanding of what will be going on, and I asked if anyone has any questions.

I shot in chronological order of the story which everyone found easier as my main character knows how to build up their emotions throughout the scene.

The equipment I used was a rode microphone, Panasonic 180 camera and lighting equipment. For the scenes that Sam wasn't acting in, he helped out throughout recording sound, where I was on the camera for the majority of the scenes.

I was very intuitive within what shots I wanted and I knew where I wanted to do them and how they looked, which helped everyone within the sense of I was a confident director and I acted like I knew what I was doing which will help everyone else's confidence levels as they will feel like they can rely on me for backup and reassurance.

I used areas outside and within the household. I used the entrance to the house, hallway, kitchen and living room within my scene. For me within filming a low budget film, I wanted to make it effective with good storytelling and I achieved this through keeping it simple but effective, I used different interesting shots to capture different reactions, and they all glued together nicely in the edit which I thought about throughout filming and in the pre production elements.

Character profile - Matthew

For my character of Matthew, I created him to be out of touch with everyone around him, and to be isolated from the public. He feels like he can let go of his emotions when he enters his home. Matthew is depressed because he feels like he can never find anyone that he can truly trust. Also being away from his family and being alone in University, makes him feel awful as he doesn't know what to do with himself. Furthermore, Matthew indulges himself into light self-harm as he scratches his knuckles when he feels isolated, but no one knows about this. He lives with his fellow housemate Jayden who is a good person but Matthew doesn't fully trust Jayden to open up about his depression. Matthew also detests social media but he has Instagram to try and blend in with other people so he doesn't stand out. Matthew drinks alcohol to try to help suppress his inner sadness but that only makes things worse as he doesn't even enjoy the taste of it, he just drinks to escape reality. Matthews's goal is to be free from the burden of depression and he knows deep down that he has to ride out his feelings to eventually feel better, which will take a long process but it is something that he is willing to do. Matthew likes his housemate Jayden but he knows that he doesn't understand anything about mental health, so Matthew thinks that it is pointless to try and let him help. Moreover, Matthew does want to achieve good grades in University but he does not enjoy his social life, as he feels like he doesn't fit into his new city life, but he does want to succeed through a good career to become a judge in court, as he feels like he is fair and looks at both sides of the story equally, he just wishes that people would notice his and accept him.

Jayden is a friendly individual who aims to succeed in life through his studies at University. He lives with Matthew at a student house, but they are not close at all. This doesn't mean that they dislike each other, they are just completely different people but they both have mutual respect for one another. Jayden enjoys football and most often looks at the bright side of life as he has had a good and healthy family upbringing and has plenty of friends in University. Jayden enjoys running as he is part of the badminton and football society's that the University has to offer. Jayden often posts on social media as he enjoys sharing his journey with his friends and followers. Jayden does not understand much about depression or mental health issues, but he does not look down on Matthew because he is different to him. He wants to try to understand and be there to support Matthew but he often finds that he is cut off from him abruptly. Jayden still proceeds to ask Matthew questions and to try to get him to talk back, but has always failed to get a proper response from him. Jayden does not drink alcohol at all and he is a religious Christian, who believes to give everyone a chance at life, but he has not cracked the code to Matthews heart.

For my casting I already knew who my two actors were going to be while I was writing the script. I chose Joseph stone to play Matthew and I chose Sam Harrison to play Jayden. Furthermore for my film I knew that Joseph was going to play the character Matthew to the way that I imagined him to act. This is because I have known Joseph for many years and we both have shared knowledge of our mutual friend who acts like Matthew, and this person also agreed for me to use him as some inspiration for this character. Additionally I chose Joseph because he can play a really intriguing mysterious character who has a depth of sadness towards him, and this is ideal for my character of Matthew.

For the character of Jayden I have chosen for Sam Harrison to play Jayden because he can play a supportive character very well, and both of my actors can listen and accept feedback very well.

Both my actors signed my actor agreement forms and were happy to be involved in my production.

We also had table reads at the start of our filming session as they both adapted to each others characters and found the table read to help them make their performances more fluent. Additionally I helped them and guided them through the table read as I expressed to both to maintain a calm and composed mindset and to glide into their characters.

As a producer and director I started with a deep analysis of pre production. This included my favourite part, creating and analysing the script. Personally I felt like my creative freedom was drawn to creating my first ever script as I enjoyed every part of doing so. In my mind I thought of every shot by doing a shot list and storyboard, but firstly I imagined every shot and going into the production all of my shots came to life as I didn't over complicate them for my first time, But I was really pleased how the matched up in my final edit.

Furthermore I created a shooting schedule to film on the second of December for four hours, which gave me plenty of time to film as everything glued together well.

I also created a floor plan to map out the whole house and created and added to my risk assessment. Personally I found the risk assessment one of the most challenging parts of my pre production because I was clueless to begin with on the layout and how to add hazards in effectively. But in the end I worked it all out and successfully created my risk assessment in full.

I had table reads in my pre production as I sent out my script giving my actors plenty of time to learn their lines as this will help them to really get into their characters.

A budget was needed to be fulfilled also as my scene only needed money to be spent on a wine bottle on squash.

Shooting permits were also allowed because we were filming in my own University rented house.

It is very important to keep everything organised and in order for pre production. By doing this you are simply making this easier for yourself as you know where everything is located, so your documents do not get lost. This has been portrayed through the reading, “Keep all your bits of paper (or electronic equivalents in files on the computer) in properly labelled lever-arch production files, logically filed with those nice coloured-card file dividers for ease of reference.” (Linda, 2010) I have taken this reading and used it through my pre production to make sure that my organisation is key to being a good producer and director. Furthermore I have done this through this course as I have my storyboard, shot list, marked up script and risk assessment all neatly ordered so I know where I can access it.

As a director I found that the most important part of production is working with actors, because it is ultimately the actors that detail the story through the art of acting, with using facial expressions, pauses and reactions I made sure that they were ready to give a believable performance which was detailed through the scene which I was happy with the outcome of their performances as they captured everything I imagined within coming up with the script and story boards. Furthermore I made sure that they had plenty of time before shooting to go over the script as I got them both to act together before it was shot, as practice is a vitally important element within acting, as they would build up their confidence through practicing the scene with each other. This is portrayed through the reading, “In a sense, the real work begins when you, the director, walk in the door and sit down with your actors. Although the director must lead the way, they are also best served by creating a spirit of collaboration, inquiry, and openness to all ideas.” (Cohn,2021) I used this quote to heart within my own directing style as it is the actors who finalise and make the story through their performance, and I made sure to work closely with my actors to make sure that the scene came out as exactly as what I had planned. I also kept an open environment which was healthy for the actors as they felt comfortable to ask questions and to even talk to me about any problems that they were facing on the day.

For the post production I focused on editing. I edited on Adobe Premiere Pro because I feel most comfortable editing on this platform.

I started with labelling my shots and lining them up with sound. Then I put them all in sequence order on the track and made cuts to put all my shots in a snappy yet effective sequence.

I know that as a director that it is vitally important to be apart of every aspect of filmmaking, from the start of pre production to finalising the last cut of my version of my scene, it is important to put all my effort into doing so.

Therefore because I made my own script and filmed the scene myself I found it easier to piece the edit together than in previous projects because I have already thought out in detail of how it will look as a final production.

On the other hand I always find the editing process difficult because I have never edited before doing this course at University and I do try to make it look as good as possible for my skills, but it does take me a long time to finish editing because I am not fluent in my editing skills, but I am pleased with the final outcome of the edit as everything does flow together nicely, as I find going from shot to shot satisfying through watching my scene as they do line up nicely together and fluently.

The final part of post production is to find your audience and sell your product to them ultimately. As this scene is for my University work I would not have to be doing this but it is still vitally important to think of your audience for the final edit within the post production. This can be seen through the academic reference, "We have access to so many ways to find our audience and get our movies out to them. The Internet has had an impact on the world, touching every facet of our lives, and the film industry is no exception. It has provided filmmakers with a venue to create buzz, enrol an audience, and offer a platform from which to sell and market our films." (Lyons,2012) You have to make sure that what I am creating through film also peaks the interest of my audience that I am creating my media for. Additionally my final edit also relates to this because I have edited a dark scene that will only be suitable for certain audiences and it is vitally important to note this when I would be selling the scene to future investors.
