African elephants are the largest land animal, adult males weighing between 1,800kg and 6,300kg. Females are smaller, weighing between 2,700kg and 3,600kg. Adult male Asian elephants weigh between 1,800kg and 4,500kg, females weighing slightly less.

The average lifespan of an elephant is about 65 years. Some predators such as lions, have no match with the fearsome adult elephants, but attacks on the young, sick, and injured elephants. Humans are the greatest threat to all the elephants. The main threats to elephant population today are habitat loss and poaching. Elephants were mostly hunted for their ivory. The greatest use of ivory is for carving and selling. In 1988, the price for the ivory is $300US.

Even though people hunt elephants, there are some who protect them. You can also protect elephants by not buying their ivory. The Animal Heroes, like the zookeepers, keep elephants as their pets and take care of them.
