The Confederates were at a disadvantage with fewer soldiers and more casualties, but they had more determination. They got the Union to back away and head down the peninsula towards the sea.<br><br>Who won? The Confederates<br><br>Significance: The Confederates seemed as if they were going to lose. But, they ended up winning and the Union realized the South wasn’t that easy to defeat.</div>]]></description>

Grant’s armies converged on Vicksburg surrounding the city and entrapping a Confederate Army under Lt. Gen. John Pemberton. On July 4, Vicksburg surrender after prolonged siege operations.<br><br>Who won? Union<br><br>Significance: This was the pinnacle of one of the most brilliant military campaigns of the war. With the loss of Pemberton’s army and this vital position&nbsp; on the Mississippi, the Confederacy was effectively split in half. Grant's successes in the West boosted his reputation, leading ultimately to his appointment as General-in-Chief of the Union armies..</div>]]></description>

On May 2, 1863 the Confederates attacked the union and wounded Stonewall Jackson. On May 3, 1863, the Confederates resumed their offensive and drove Hooker’s larger army back to a new defensive line nearer the fords. Lee defeated a rear separate Federal force.&nbsp;<br><br>Who won? Mansfield Lovell, Union Admiral David Farragut<br><br>What happened: In the middle of the night of April 24, Admiral David Farragut led a fleet of 24 gunboats, 19 mortar boats, and 15,000 soldiers in a daring run past the forts. The river was open then so the Union Armada plowed through the Confederate Forces, Gen. Mansfield Lovell surrendered to the Union forces. because&nbsp; Adm. Farragut threatened to burn the city down.<br><br>Who won: Union<br><br>Significance:The Confederacy lost a major city, and the lower Mississippi soon became a Union highway for 400 miles to Vicksburg, Mississippi.The capture of this vital southern city was a huge blow to the Confederacy.</div>]]></description>

The Union had outnumbered them. The confederates counter attack swept back and forth between Miller’s cornfield. The Union pushed the confederates back to Antietam<br><br>Who won? draw<br><br>Significance: The Confederate retreat gave Abraham Lincoln the “victory” he desired before issuing the Emancipation Proclamation. This was the bloodiest battle in US history.</div>]]></description>
