*It is important that the venue is suitable and accessible for the family though.  If they know that their physical and emotional needs have been considered prior to meeting, it will show your commitment to supporting them through the process.
*Allowing the parent to see agendas, to ask questions before going into meetings, writing notes or asking you to mediate on their behalf helps put them at ease and feel confident in the environment. a list of notes and questions prior to meeting can help them feel comfortable.
*The basics of making them feel settled and confident mean that even if the meeting is about positive progress by the family or potential child protection concerns - they still feel comfortable and supported.
*Logistics, transport, considering other children and convenient times of the day are also crucial to ensure the parent engages.
*Asking the parent where they would like to meet is useful too; especially in the early days of their relationship.  As you build their confidence, their willingness to ty new environments will increase as they feel less intimidated.
*Suitable informal clothing, pleasant rooms with adequate temperatures and minimalist clutter help this process.
