2. Although there were a lot of things occurring all at once, we do believe it was necessary to build an atomic bomb. After all, there were countries whose rising powers not only threatened Europe, but the U.S. as well. The atomic bomb was dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, leading to Japan’s surrender and the official ending of WWII.

On June 18, 1942, Colonel James Marshall of the Army Corps of the Engineers District moved the atomic bomb plans to a new group called the Manhattan Engineer District.

6. An enrichment plant was built at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to devise the electromagnetic structure of the atomic bomb. On July 4, 1944, Oppenheimer showed plans of Emilio Segre’s fission measurements. These measurements led to a significant turning point in the Manhattan Project.

7. The Manhattan Project experienced even more problems in September of 1944. People were finding out about this secretive project but plutonium production hadn’t even started. A notable error occurred on September 26, 1944 when the first full-scale plutonium reactor was completed and loaded with uranium. Known as the B pile, it shut down for no reason. It then restarted the next day.

8. There are many cons to the dropping of atomic bombs in Japan, most of which include moral issues. Could the U.S. have gone about it differently? Perhaps, but then again the bombs led directly to Japan’s surrender and the end of WWII. Japan was among of the few rising powers that posed a threat to the entire globe. This issue had to be addressed one way or another. However, this incident can never be compensated due to the fact that many Japanese lives were lost.
