Claim 2: The South American Plate and African Plate moved apart gradually.

According to Evidence Card A, there is evidence that earthquakes occur in a pattern along the plate boundary between the South American and African Plate. This piece of evidence is important because it proves to us the plates are moving gradually. If the plates moved suddenly, we would be feeling very violent shaking and harsh earthquakes without warning all the time. Therefore, this supports Claim 2 that the plates move gradually.

There is also important information on Evidence Card B that a mid-ocean ridge landform was found along the plate boundary between the South American Plate and African Plate. The reason why this evidence is important is because the way a mid-ocean ridge is formed is that it forms new crust as the mantle cools. Hence why it has "wrinkles," or ridges. If the plates move suddenly, the mid-ocean ridge wouldn't have any of those said wrinkles, it would just be flat land. Therefore, this piece of evidence refutes Claim 1 and supports Claim 2.

(Aka clam #2)

In evidence card D it states that fossils were from millions of years ago and shows that it takes millions of years to move a fossil. Therefore, plates would not move suddenly but more gradually.
And in evidence card A it claims that the plates have a pattern between the South American Plate and African plates. If plates were to move fast and sudden there would be earthquakes all the time.
This supports that claim #2 helps
