Some thoughts on setting up our Book Clubs:
1. Grouping students in different ways can be an option: differentiating groups by reading ability or high/low; grouping by student interest.
2. Questions: use containers for questions at each grouping; start off students with some questions, and guide them toward creating their own through small group/whole class discussions; maintaining a focus on the universality of questions so that they apply to any book.
3. Assessments: we will determine student progress through observations, questioning, the successful completion of graphic organizers, as well as the completion of reading.
4. Student choice will be a priority to maintain student engagement.

Teacher would select at least 5 books based on a genre or theme and have students select. Students would meet once or twice a week to with their book club. Students would receive an exit ticket to complete for a participation grade. OR give students an assignment to complete before discussion such as give 3 character traits for your character and write evidence and page number from the text.

Organized choice.
Have a google form of choices, and the students select their top 3 choices
Guiding choice:
the descriptions will include reading level. Give high-achieving students the chance to suggest a book. This could be the final question on the google form.
During Book Club:
Each book club meeting would focus on a specific skill (theme, characterization, symbolism, etc.) Students will be provided a set of guiding questions or graphic organizer to complete during the meeting. To encourage student buy-in, students would be allowed to bring snacks to book club meetings once a week (snacks will be used as a reward for book clubs who stay on task and complete assignments)
Assessing Reading:
Listening to their discussions, grading culminating discussions on eClass and providing feedback, choice board of final product (animoto, kahoot, imovie trailer, etc.)
Providing direct instruction:
mini lessons would be implemented to reinforce the skills each meeting is focusing on.

5. What are students doing during Book Club? The teacher kicks off the Book Club with a reminder of the focus (a specific standard or focus on theme/genre) to provide a purpose for reading. Students engage in independent reading, and they may complete sections of an accompanying graphic organizer. A teacher-led discussion will guide students toward a discussion of over-arching standards or themes, with the idea of gradually releasing more of the discussion to the students; they will learn, over time, how to create their own questions about the texts and to think more critically about their reading.

We are thinking that for accountability, we would like to embed creative projects that would enable students to further explore their understanding of literary concepts, such as characterization and theme. Projects might look like creating a poster to illustrate theme, or using engaging digital apps like Aurasma with iPads.
