The colours used on the advert are the same as the colours used on the album cover. This creates a distinctive house style for the album, making it easy to recognise for the audience. The colours are slightly muted as there is a retro filter placed over the image. This filter makes the image look like a polaroid picture. The colour of the writing on the album is white, which ensures that it stands out against the dark background and is easy to understand. White lettering is often used on indie album covers and adverts as it creates a simplistic style that is associated with the indie genre.

The image used on the advert is the same as the image used on the album cover. This is a convention of form that is used across all genres, especially the indie genre. Using the same image for both means that the audience will then be able to recognise the album when they see it in stores and will be more likely to buy it. The image used on the album cover looks like a Polaroid picture; they have used this to their advantage and made the magazine advert look like a polaroid with the white border template along the bottom. The Polaroid design suits the indie genre as retro designs are conventionally used in indie products.

All of the writing on the magazine advert is sans serif. This style of font is conventional for the indie genre as it is more modern and simplistic. The font is large to ensure that it is clear to understand and recognise. Using large, white fonts has become a trend in recent indie albums - this will help the audience to identify the genre. There is barely any text on the album advert, this ensures that the audience will be able to read the information easily and not get confused by unnecessary text.. It also suits the simplistic style of the advert and the album; fitting in with the band's minimalistic style. The same font has been used for both the band name and the album name; conventionally albums use contrasting fonts to distinguish between the artist and album.

Layout

The layout is very simple, with the band name along the top and the album name and the rest of the information along the bottom. This technique uses the route of the eye to ensure that the band name is the first thing the audience will notice, meaning they will be able to instantly identify the artist - which is especially important as the same fonts have been used for both. The Polaroid style template used for the magazine advert is successful as it fits in with the retro style that is commonly associated with the indie genre. The image used also looks like it was taken using a Polaroid camera, so therefore this is a direct link. This layout means that there is space along the bottom of the advert to write important information such as the release date.

This magazine advert has used the convention of form of using the album cover as the main image on the advert. This technique is successful as it creates a distinctive house style for the artist that can be found throughout their products and it also means that the audience will be able to recognise the album when they see it in shops. The magazine advert is very simple, which is also a convention of form; having a simple layout means that the audience will be more likely to read and be able to understand the advert. Sans serif fonts are also conventional as they are typically much easier to read than serif fonts. The retro style of the advert is a convention of the indie genre.

The colours used are the same on both the album cover and the magazine advert. The main colours are black, white and blue. These are stereotypically more masculine colours and so they are appropriate for the indie genre which tends to be predominantly male-focused. The effect of this bright blue on top of the black and white image creates a stark contrast, making the writing stand out even more. The colours used also directly link to the name of the album "I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose", which is a play on words. The audience will be likely to pick up on this and so it helps to make it more memorable.

The image used is also exactly the same as the image used on the album cover. I have found this to be a convention of form, with many artists using the image from their album cover as the main image on their album advert. This technique makes the album art more recognisable and helps to create a house style for the artist. The image used is quite odd, however it suits the indie genre as the artists have much more creative freedom because they don't have to follow more mainstream, traditional conventions. In a way, this image can be linked to the name of the album. His body language and action suggest that he has let go of something and is now free - this action embodies shaking the blues loose, which is the name of the album. The image used is conventional in a way, as many indie artists choose not to feature theirselves on the cover and instead use a random image, such as this one.

All of the fonts used on the magazine advert are sans serif. Sans serif fonts are conventionally much easier to read than serif fonts, which is important for adverts as they need to fulfil their purpose of promoting the album quickly; the audience must be able to understand them easily, therefore sans serif fonts are the most effective. This type of font is also much more modern and sleek than a serif font. Just like the album cover, the band name is the largest piece of text on the album advert. This is important in the indie genre as the bands are much less known than more popular, mainstream artists and so the audience need to be able to identify them. This magazine advert also uses the technique of including some of the bands more popular songs on the advert. Some people may know and enjoy these songs, however they may be unaware of the artist - using the names of songs on the advert helps to broaden the audience and intrigue new fans.

The layout of this magazine advert is slightly cluttered due to the extra song information, yet it is still simple and easy to read, which is the most important thing because the audience need to be able to read it easily. Almost half of the advert is taken up by the band name, which shows their importance and also ensures that it attracts the audience's attention. Due to the route of the eye, the band name is also the first thing that the audience will read; again this is important in helping the audience to quickly identify the name of the artist that is being promoted.

Overall, this magazine advert is very conventional, both for the indie genre and as a successful magazine advert. The image used on the album cover has been used as the main image on the magazine advert - this is a convention of form that will help the audience to recognise the album in future and also to create a distinctive style for the artist. The dark colours used are conventional for the indie genre as it conventionally more of a masculine dominated genre. Sans serif fonts are a convention of form that ensure the audience can read the information and understand what is being advertised. A simple layout that uses the route of the eye is also a convention of form that ensures the advert is effective.
