We think that the ending of the story is satisfactory for what the book had to offer. Overall it wasn’t the best ending but it tied everything in the story together and closed all storyline gaps. In all, Amir seems at peace with life and for once he is truly happy which is something he hasn’t been very fond of for most of his life.

We believe this due to how at the very end during the kite scene, the readers can see the Amir has slowly won over Sohrab even if it was just for a split second. "Because when spring comes, it melts the snow one flake at a time. And maybe, I just witnessed the first flake melting."(Hosseini 371).  This scene represents how Sohrab is warming up to Amir again. Just like how it takes time for the snow to melt, it will take time for Sohrab to be able to trust and be more welcoming with Amir again. Sohrab helps Amir kite-fight for which he also smiles at Amir when Amir offers to run the kite they defeated. This is pleasing because after all that Sohrab and Amir went through they are bonding again. This piece of evidence shows how Amir is heading in the right direction of recovery. That even though nothing is near perfect, he can finally move on. It's just so satisfying for the audience to see all the pain yet progress be tied together at the end. Also, it's a very good ending because it ties in with the title. We get to see Amir feel like himself again after all this time, being at a gathering of Afghans with his wife and Sohrab, the latter of which letting him to hold onto his memories with Hassan. We can see this happiness after acknowledging Sohrab’s smile while he was running the kite they cut: “It was only a smile, nothing more. It didn’t make everything all right...But I’ll take it. With open arms. Because when spring comes, it melts the snow one flake at a time, and maybe I just witnessed the first flake melting.” (Hosseini 371). While it didn’t necessarily have a happy ending it still ended on a good note. After all that has happened it would be difficult for this book to truly have a happy ending, but the way Hosseini ended this story was very peaceful. He also tied in earlier aspects from the book. “‘For you, a thousand times over,’ I heard myself say. Then I turned and ran. It was only a smile, nothing more. It didn’t make everything all right. It didn’t make anything all right. Only a smile”(371). Here, we see that Amir accepts that things aren’t great right now, but he is hopeful for the future once he sees Sohrab smile. Also, Amir saying to Sohrab what Hassan once said to him a long time ago shows how Amir is continuing to make things right to fix his past. The book does not say upfront whether or not Sohrab’s life turns out either good or bad, instead it leaves it as a cliffhanger. However Hosseini does hint toward Sohrab having a good life when he brings up how he smiles in the end; ¨ It was only a smile, nothing more. It didn't make everything all right. It didn't make anything all right. Only a smile. A tiny thing. A leaf in the woods, shaking in the wake of a startled bird´s flight… I just witnessed the first flake melting¨(Hosseini 371). This passage supports the question being asked because Hosseini is explaining to the audience how Amir saw that one thing from Sohrab that made him see that smile was bringing him one step closer to having the parental bond that Sohrab needs. Throughout the entire story we have seen only death and destruction and the ending was a good reminder that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
