Instead of giving the letter "A" it's original meaning of Adulterous she instead uses the trials to demonstrate how women can be powerful.

Later, in chapter 5 she uses this talent to make dresses for the women in the town even though she is looked down upon. The A may stand for adulterous but it's recognized by power.
