A metaphor is considered as a figure of speech that includes a word or a phrase, which is applied to an action or an object but is not applicable literally.

In the story, "The Necklace" a metaphor that had a great impact on the story, was when M Loisel brought an invitation to the ball where people have great wealth but this invitation was actually a metaphor to how it would lead them to ten years of very hard labor. This is a metaphor because the literal application was the ball and the metaphorical application is how they would go through hard labor, and the author did not signify this during the story so it was not direct.

Point of View

Point of view is the way that the story is told. The way that the narration is used. For instance, there are three persons that you can use to narrate a story. First person uses I, we, us, me, etc and it usually explains the mindset of a certain character (usually the main character). Second person is from the perspective of "you" and is less used in stories. And third person is when a story is told from someone else that is watching from outside and have constant use of words such as he, she, it, they, etc. Third person can also be limited which means that it only talks about one person and omniscient which talks about many people.

From the story, "Never stop on the Motorway," the narrator constantly talks about Diana using her name and she. Therefore this is a third person narration. Also since it only talks about Diana during this third person story, it would be considered as limited.

"Motivation” acts as a reason behind a character's actions or behavior during the story. This behavior is characterized by the character's own consent and will power to do something.

An example of this was from the short story "Fatty Legs," the protagonist named Olemaun, burned her stockings because she wanted to prove to the Raven that she was needed to be treated with respect of herself and her own culture. This is motivation because it acts as a reason behind a character's actions and that's what this scene represents.

The descriptions are very vivid and helps us picture in our minds, what the situation looks like to make readers get a better understanding and make the book more interesting and enjoyable.

An example of imagery is when reading "Never stop on a motorway." It gives us many detailed descriptions of how she is getting chased by the black van it this helps us envision what is going on that this literary in this situation created a lot of suspense. This is imagery because we can picture the book's situation in our minds.

Foreshadowing is a common literary device for short stories and it gives a warning or an indication for a future or upcoming event.

Foreshadowing was used in the story "Fatty Legs" when she received her red stockings. She looked at a fire and talked about her plans. This foreshadows that she will burn her stockings because the indication is that she hates her stockings, looks at a fire, and makes plans, therefore that would be one of the only reasonable assumptions that readers will make. In this situation it was not very hidden, but in other short stories, there is a possibility.

Situational Irony is when readers or characters form the story expect sometime to happen and they end up getting the unexpected or unintended. This is a very popular literary device used for short stories.

An example of situational irony is from the book "The Necklace" In the story, a woman called Mme Loisel, loses a necklaces that was lended to her. The necklace is worth a lot of money, and she spends ten years of her life trying to make the necklace. When she brings the necklace back to the store, it turns out the necklace that she got lended to, was a fake and she wasted ten years of her life trying to make a real version. This was unexpected and seemed unlikely therefore, it is situational irony.

A flashback is a transition in a story to an earlier time, that interrupts the normal time of events. A flashback in a movie or book might show what happened when a character was younger.

In the story, "Fatty legs," an aboriginal women tells readers a story about when she was younger. Often the allusions made are to past events or figures, but sometimes allusions are made to current famous people or events.

Malthide from the story, "The Necklace," is similar to Cinderella because they are both the prettiest girl of the ball and they both lose something that wasn't theirs.

A plot in pieces of literature, is sequences of events that make up the story. An exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and denouement. An exposition is an intro to a story. Rising action is events that lead up to the climax of the story. The climax is the highest emotional and intense peak of the story which has a great impact on the story. The falling action is where the story is coming to an end and leading to the denouement. The denouement acts as a conclusion to a story.

The story "Fatty legs" will be used as an example.

Exposition: Olemaun is an aboriginal girl that is curious of learning how to read and that is a passion of hers.

Rising action: When she arrives to the residential school, she is constantly harassed by the teacher who is called "The Raven."

Climax: When "The Raven," gives Olemaun a pair of red stockings different from her other classmates, it makes her legs look fat. Olemaun is tired of the harassment that she is receiving from "The Raven" and she burns her stockings to show that she should not be treated in that manner because of her identity.

Falling action: Olemaun returns home and her mother does not recognize her because she looks too modern. Olemaun is happy that she gets to return home.

Denouement: Olemaun does not like the food offered by her parents because she was to westernized by the school and she is less intrigued by the culture.
