The Free-Soil Party was organized by anti-slavery men in the north, democrats who were resentful at Polk's actions, and some conscience Whigs. The Free-Soil Party was against slavery in the new territories. They also advocated federal aid for internal improvements and urged free government homesteads for settlers. This Free-Soil Party foreshadowed the emergence of the Republican party.

AGAINST: Admired by the famous Abraham Lincoln, Henry Clay believed the slavery to be a violation of the rights of man. Interestingly, Clay was actually a slave owner according to NPR, while supporting gradual emancipation of slaves. Clay was known as a slave owning abolitionist.

FOR: John C. Calhoun was very passionate in seeking to secure the institution of slavery, at least in the plantation South, as well as supporting states' rights. Calhoun argued that if a slaveholder brought his slaves into a free state, they remained enslaved. One of Calhoun's most notable achievements was his gag rule, which prevented discussion regarding the abolition of slavery.

FOR(moderate): Daniel Webster viewed the issue of slavery from a historical view rather than based on moral concepts. He believed that previous acts of Congress, such as the Northwest Ordinance and Missouri Compromise, should be upheld. Webster, a moderate, believed that slavery couldn't be removed from places where it already existed, and couldn't be introduced in southwestern lands that weren't ideal for agricultural purposes.
