He was the only son of James Hamilton, 1st Lord Hamilton, and his wife, Mary Stewart, Countess of Arran. Mary was a daughter of King James II of Scotland and his Queen consort Mary of Guelders, and was a sister of King James III of Scotland.

Hamilton succeeded to his father’s lordship and inherited his lands when his father died in 1479.In 1489 his first cousin King James IV made him Sheriff of Lanark, a position his father had previously had, and a Scottish Privy Counsellor.[2] By 28 April 1490 he was married to Elizabeth Home, daughter of Alexander Home, 2nd Lord Home.

Between April and August 1502, he commanded a naval fleet sent to help King Hans of Denmark, James IV’s uncle, defeat a Swedish rebellion. He negotiated James’s marriage to Margaret Tudor and was present at the wedding on 8 August 1503. On the same day Lord Hamilton was created Earl of Arran, with the formal grant three days later, “for his nearness of blood” and his services at the time of the marriage. He was appointed Lieutenant General of Scotland and in May 1504 commanded a naval expedition to suppress an uprising in the Western Isles.

In September 1507, James IV sent Hamilton as his ambassador on a diplomatic mission to the court of Louis XII of France. When returning in early 1508, he was briefly detained in the Kingdom of England by Henry VII, who was suspicious of a renewal of the Auld Alliance between Scotland and France.

When Henry VIII of England joined the War of the League of Cambrai by invading France in 1513, Scotland came under pressure to support France against England. Hamilton was given command of the Scottish naval fleet. He first sailed to Ulster and attacked Carrickfergus, the main English stronghold there. The fleet then sailed to France, arriving there in September 1513, too late to be much help as the Scottish army had been defeated at the Battle of Flodden Field in England on 9 September, with James IV being killed in battle.

During the minority of King James V he opposed Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus and the English party. He plotted against the Regent John Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany. He was president of the council of regency during Albany’s absence in France from 1517 to 1520.

He was defeated in an attempt to overpower Angus in the streets of Edinburgh in 1520, a riot known as “Cleanse the Causeway“. He was again a member of the council of regency in 1522 and Lieutenant of the South. He joined the Queen Dowager Margaret Tudor in ousting Albany and proclaiming James V in 1524.

Hamilton was compelled by Henry VIII of England to readmit Angus to the council. He supported Angus against John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Lennox in 1526 at the Battle of Linlithgow Bridge, but on the escape of James V from the Douglases, Hamilton received Bothwell from Angus’s forfeited estates.

The Financial Crime & Compliance Investigations (FCCI) Unit comprises of several teams that conduct complex & serious investigations across all types of fraud and financial crime risk. The role holder is principally responsible for investigations into the most serious financial crime. Role holders must be able to conduct competent investigations into all types of Financial Crime, working alone/as part of a team, sharing knowledge and experience as appropriate. The role holder is required to assist the Senior Investigations Manager, FCCI in designing and deploying, policies, procedures and strategies that will minimise risk of Financial Crime within or against HSBC.

Duties & Responsibilities

· Assisting a team of investigators who undertake detailed financial crime investigations

· Day-to-day, ensuring compliance with procedures, Global Standards and local legislative/regulatory requirements are met across all financial crime risks, i.e. Sanction, Anti Money Laundering (AML) Anti Bribery & Corruption (AB&C), Fraud and GIIG (Global Internal Investigations Group).

· Assist the Senior Investigations Manager FCCI in identifying best practices/ procedures providing guidance and solutions to the Business and / or involved areas, in timely and effective manner for each of the identified cases focusing on control weaknesses, responsible and decision

· Assisting the FCCI Investigations Manager and Regional Head FCCI, providing expertise to the implementation of globally led change initiatives within regions across all Financial Crime and Risks

· Building collaborative and excellent working relationships with internal/external stakeholders

· Identifying cases which meet the criteria for escalation to the Regional Investigation Oversight (RIO) Committee

· Providing clear lines of investigation for each case and streamlining processing to minimize duplication of effort

· Directing and implementing investigations to ensure they are efficiently and effectively managed within the agreed timeline whilst remaining mindful that investigations can be diverse and complex, adapting an approach to the requirements of each investigation

· The proactive identification, mitigation and timely recovery and reporting of financial losses

· Supervision of FCCI related tasks formed and closed by team members within the Case Management System

· Provide guidance and identify ongoing improvements of practical guidance to business lines in respect of queries which relate to an investigation

· Providing clear direction and support to team members, acting as a “go-to” person, escalating any immediate issues/concerns to Senior Management/HR if necessary.

· Maximise loss recovery and minimise risk exposure by taking prompt action where required.

· Provide oversight of intelligence / case files being shared with Law Enforcement / government agencies

· Assist in complex Global investigations as well as GIIG lead investigations as requested.

· Ensure that the Bank’s interests are externally represented in order to build and reinforce professional and positive relationships with external customers/stakeholders. Maintain close relationships with Law Enforcement and other government agencies involved in the management of cases.

Knowledge & Experience

· Investigative skills from law enforcement, regulatory, forensic accountancy or legal disputes. Seasoned professional with direct involvement, particularly within FCC environment

· Ability to undertake intrinsic investigations/analysis of customer activity and Case Management experience

· Good working knowledge of Sanctions, Financial Crime and AB&C legislation in the region and, associated regulation & guidance

· Ability to manage and lead change, contributing to joining up with the other teams in Risk and Business globally

· Ability to recognize suspicious financial activities and escalate to meet internal/external regulatory requirements

During his tenure as a public physician, he began to perform experiments on his unwitting patients. It is said that witnessing the death and destruction of 1900 Storm – together with his own personal loss - drove the doctor insane.

His madness continues to this day as he tries to recoup his losses and continue his research. So take a deep breath, and dare to visit Haunted Mayfield Manor – a real-life Ghostbusters experience.

Epilepsy Care Group Singapore Awareness Association: How Is Epilepsy Triggered?

At present, around 37,000 people in Ireland are affected by epilepsy, now neuroscientists have identified a new gene involved in the disorder. The teams finding may help in the development of a new treatment option for the condition.

The study, conducted by researchers at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSO), is published in Nature Medicine.

The team focused on a new class of gene called a microRNA. This class of gene controls protein production inside cells. The researchers found that patients with epilepsy have significantly higher levels of microRNA-134 in their brain. In addition, they found that they could prevent epileptic seizures from occurring by using a newly found drug called antagomir, which locks onto the microRNA-134 and removes it from the brain cell.

Professor David Henshall, Department of Physiology & Medical Physics, RCSI and senior author of the paper explained:

"We have been looking to find what goes wrong inside brain cells to trigger epilepsy. Our research has discovered a completely new gene linked to epilepsy and it shows how we can target these gene using drug-like molecules to reduce the brain's susceptibility to seizures and the frequency in which they occur."

Dr Eva Jimenez-Mateos, Department of Physiology & Medical Physics, RCSI said: "Our research found that the antagomir drug protects the brain cells from toxic effects of prolonged seizures and the effects of the treatment can last up to one month."

Approximately 37,000 people in Ireland live with epilepsy. For two-thirds of all patients, seizures can be controlled by medication. Unfortunately, the other third continue having seizures, regardless of what medicines they take.

The authors say that their findings could potentially lead to new treatment methods that could help a greater proportion of patients control their seizures.

This study could potentially offer new treatment methods for patients.

Approximately 3% of all people in the USA will at some time in their lives be diagnosed with epilepsy. Among younger patients, the cause is more likely to be due to a congenital or developmental condition. Tumors are the more likely causes among patients diagnosed after the age of 40. Epilepsy can also be caused by central nervous system infections or head trauma.

At any one time, between 5 and 10 in every 1,000 people have epilepsy. Lifetime prevalence is high because many patients have seizures, which stop, and never come back, while others (much rarer) die from it.

Over the last ten years, epilepsy rates in industrial countries have dropped among children, but have risen in seniors.
