The Uses Of Shorthand

Whilst the use of shorthand is becoming much more limited due to the ease of which audio recording technology is becoming available i.e. apps on phones or diphones becoming more portable and cheaper. However, certain instances require that no such technology be used, such as in courthouses or occasional political meetings. In these circumstances shorthand allows for much faster recording of information from these events.

After frequent uses of it occur when audio equipment also is unavailable such as recording a phone call, and especially in those instances simply taking rapid notes using shorthand can relax interviewees as no notification has to be given when taking notes, BUT MUST be given when a call is being recorded. Additionally, once interviews or events have finished going through the entirety of your recordings can be extensive and time consuming, so easy to read notes can be vital in newspaper and news agency environments.

Especially as it’s regarded more as a skill of ‘proper’, old fashioned journalists.

The types of diploma available to get are the NCTJ diploma, which requires at least 60 words per minute in writing. However above this is the NCTJ Gold Diploma, which if obtained will undoubtedly improve perceptions from employers, again maintaining the fact of its importance for media organisations as they often place a “... words per minute” requirement on their applicants.

The course consists of two parts; the theory of Teeline Shorthand and speed building. The theory of shorthand is when you will learn about the structure of shorthand and how words are written, which is definitely needed as learning shorthand is like “learning to read and write all over again” (Paul Thompson, UoS Shorthand Instructor). Speed building in shorthand is when you’ll gradually increase the word per minute you’re capable of till you reach the standards of the NCTJ exams.

Why Teeline Shorthand?

Comparable to the Pitman style of shorthand, Teeline shorthand isn’t based on the phonetic qualities of English. Instead separates words into their different characters and essentially bases the words on the brain’s sense to fill in gaps in words to create legible sentences. When writing a word you can miss out vowels from the middle of words, as well as double letters and Es from the end of words.

Shorthand can often be referred to as a different language, especially when it comes to learning it, most commonly because of the structural elements called standard and special outlines which are used to write words and letters. However, the words don’t differ from their standard longhand English, only the writing them of does as “it’s just a fast way of writing...prioritising speed over readability.” (Paul Thompson, UoS Shorthand Instructor)
