“quickly identify and match the needs of all students”

I chose this quote re: MTSS* because it is essential, to the point, and can be surprisingly difficult to do. For example, does the student need glasses? Does s/he wear them? And as we’ve read, a student’s EL struggles might be a learning disability as well, or instead. We can find out how much their home-language comprehension has developed, to try to solve the mystery, but that’s tricky when parents work full-time, language may come from many sources including video game characters, and other unknowns may be there. However, as we try to solve these mysteries with experts on board, we can implement UDL, human instinct (“hmm, she walked up to the whiteboard to read it”), and care to see what helps students along the rocky and fascinating and essential journey we call education.

* Multi-Tiered System of Supports. The quote is from the website https://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/cr/ri/mtsscomprti2.asp
