Irrational numbers are types of numbers that cannot be expressed in a simple way.

Rational numbers are numbers that are simplified and can be expressed easily in a form of a fraction or ratio while irrational numbers are complicated and cannot be easily written.

The square root of five is considered irrational because if you simplify it to a decimal form, it becomes too difficult to express into fraction. In this case, the answer would be a non-terminating decimal.
