It was in response to the Adani mine predicament . The financial issue behind the Adani mine, is that over 17 banks have declined to offer Adani a loan to start his Mine, which forces him to use the government as a 'lee way'. However, the funds that Adani intends to use, are the funds for the rehabilitation of unemployment in Australian.

Argument- the over arching point of view is that the Adani is a lost cause. In support, the author uses evidence which appeals to logos.

Purpose and positioning-
The author persuades the public- whom are the people who fund the project- to protest and reject the project. Using Logos, the author uses factual evidence to appeal to the audience. The author positions the audience to have immense power of the outcome.

issue and implications-
The predominant issues within the text is the waste of financial resources if the mine is built and the affect it will cause to the environment. Catering towards the environment, the Adani mine will damage the Great Barrier Reef, which in turn looses tourist revenue.

Text type-
The text is an opinion piece, and was chosen to respond to the Adani mine issue. As the Adani mine is dependent on the public, having a response written by the public increases validity and credibility

Author and audience

POLITICAL CARTOON
Capitals Framework:

Context- This cartoon was created on the 12th of April 2017. It was made in response to an agreement made between Adani and Malcom Turnbull to build the biggest coal mine in Australia. Background knowledge is somewhat necessary in understanding the reasons for the construction of this coal mine.
Contention- The Prime Minister, having normally been known as being an environmentalist and someone who is committed to combatting against issues within our environment has decided to put forward the construction of a coal mine which will be harmful for the environment.
Argument- Malcom Turnbull is putting behind his environmentalism in favour of building a coal mine which will in turn produce more jobs and most importantly for both him and Adani, profit will be made.
Purpose and Positioning- The author's purpose is to send out a message to the readers that Australia's Prime Minister, Malcom Turnbull is not caring too much about the environment, even though he is known for being an environmentalist.
Issue and Implications- The issue of this cartoon is that even though Malcom Turnbull is known for being an environmentalist within Australian society, he has made the decision with Mr. Adani to construct Australia's biggest coal mine. Coal is a very hazardous fossil fuel which can cause a lot of harm to the surrounding environment. Most alarming is that the site for this coal mine is within enough distance to the Great Barrier Reef to cause harm to it which could jeopardise the survival of it. So what is being put forward by the author is that Mr Turnbull who is an environmentalist, is putting that in behind in favour of more jobs and profit.
Text Type- This text is a political cartoon.
Author and Audience- The author of this political cartoon is Ron Tandberg. It is hard to see as to whether he has a huge interest on the topic of the Adani project, however it can be seen that he has a knowledge on the subject. Tandberg's identity does not make an impact on the audience nor the point of view in regards to this cartoon. The target audience for this political cartoon is the general public, but more specifically people interested in politics and the environment.
Language Features- Visual text is the predominant language feature used within this cartoon. It has been used by Tandberg to portray his opinion and what he believes this issue has come to. The impact that this may make on the reader is that it may make them believe that what has been put forward may be reality. The way in which visual text supports the arguments put forward by Tandberg is that it gives it a visual flare to it which in turn appeals more to the audience.
Stakeholders- The stakeholders within this issue are those impacted by the construction of the coal mine, the prime minister of Australia, Mr Malcom Turnbull and Mr Adani. If Mr Turnbull was to continue with the construction of the coal mine, this could cause harmful damage to the environment as well as widespread hate amongst environmentalists. On the other positive end, tens of thousands of jobs will be created, profit will be made and in turn will boost our nation's economy.

It was in response to the billionaire Gautam Adani whose company seeks a loan of $900 million from the Australian Prime Minister to help ship coal to India from the Carmichael coal mine. Background knowledge needed is who this billionaire and their interests and how it impact Australia.
A: That the funding of the Adani coal mine using taxpayers money is a poor investment.
1. Tens of thousands of jobs will be created and generate a huge amount in taxes and royalties for the federal and state government.
2. The mine should not require any taxpayer assistance.
3. If the project goes ahead it will go ahead the beliefs of the government in the wisdom of the free market.
4. It sets us apart from forward-thinking nations.
5. Taxpayers are left footing the bill when commercial lenders baulk.
6. Taxpayers are entitled to expect the board to be diligent in its decision.
P: The author wants to tell the reader that there is nothing beneficial in the investing of the Adani coal mine using taxes. The author uses statistical evidence, figures of speech and idioms. By doing so he tries to position the reader against the idea of the Adani coal mine.
I: The issues include the idea of the government going against the belief in the wisdom of the free market, that taxpayers shouldn’t have to fund this coal mine and that it sets us apart from forward-thinking nations.
T: It is an editorial. It has an explanation of the issue, opinions from the opposing viewpoint, opinions of the writer delivered in a professional manner and a concise conclusion that powerfully summaries the writer's opinion.
A: The author is a SUNDAY MORNING HERALD editorial. The specific author is not shown on the article. This audience targets those who are particularly interested in the issue of the Adani coal mine such as taxpayers.
L: The most dominant persuasive features are idioms such as “banging the drum about…” and “…will light up hundreds of thousands of poor households.”
S: The stakeholders involved include those in India such as the ones in poverty who may be subject to even more pollution if the project is successful. Taxpayers may be concerned as to how their money is being invested, Adani’s company will depend on the financial aid of taxpayers and Malcolm Turnbull will be responsible for the hundreds of thousands of lives that will be affected due to his choice.

For / Against:
For:
- it will create “tens of thousands of jobs”
- revenues for federal and state government
- coal will light up hundreds and thousands of poor households
- it will help India’s poor people
Against:
- the mine should not require any taxpayer assistance
- it sets us apart from forward-thinking nations
- taxpayers are entitled to expect the board to be diligent in its decision

Part 2: Canberra Times Letters to the Editor: Turnbull and Dutton don't display the Australian Values they profess

http://www.smh.com.au/comment/ct-letters/canberra-times-letters-to-the-editor-turnbull-and-dutton-dont-display-the-australian-values-they-profess-20170423-gvqpdc.html

Context:

This piece was created on April 12th 2017 in response to the prospect of the Adani coal mine railways being built using Australia taxpayers money. Prior knowledge about Adani and who the funding is coming from is required.

Argument:

The contention of this text is that it should be the Indian government that provides funding for the railway, not Australian taxpayers. The arguments that are put forward to support this view are:

The project is for the benefit of Indian people

The Australian government will be unable to ensure that Adani adheres to certain terms and conditions

Purpose and positioning:

The author’s overall purpose is to try and get the Indian government to fund Adani’s project as India benefits from the deal more than Australia. The author uses evidence, “concessional loan of approximately $1 billion” to support his view that we will be putting in more money than we will gain after the project is finished. The author wants to position the audience against Adani as it will mean that it may force the Indian government to provide the loan.

Issue and implications:

The issue in this piece is that Australian taxpayers may have to loan more approximately $1 billion to Adani to build the railway. The implication of this issue is that the Australian economy may see little to no benefit from the railway and mine after the project has concluded.

Text type:

This text is a letter to the editor and has been chosen by the author as it allows for them to convey their personal opinions. A feature of this type of text is that it tends to be very biased, which may impact the reader as they only receive one view on the issue.

Author and audience:

The author of this text, Paul E Bowler, does not seem as though he has a vested interest in the issue and it is unclear as to whether his identity has an impact on the viewpoint or audience, though his text is biased. The target audience of this text is Australian taxpayers and politicians. This is made apparent as they are the only two Australian “groups” pointed out.

Language features:

The language features used in this text include inclusive language, appeals, evidence and repetition.

Inclusive language, such as the phrase “Australia” is used sit targets a specific audience and tries to create a mentality in which ‘we’ are standing up for what is right against the ’enemy’. It supports the argument stated as it positions the audience against Adani and the Indian government.

Appeals, specifically to the hip pocket nerve, are used as it evokes a feeling of concern as to if the money spent will be for the benefit of Australians.

Evidence is used as it provides weight to the authors argument and paints them in as though they are informed on the issue and know what they are talking about.

Repetition is used concurrently with inclusive language to remind the audience that it is “us vs. them” and position them against Adani.

Stakeholders:

The stakeholders in this issue are Adani, the Indian government, and the Australian government. They all stand to lose the support they currently have when it comes to future decisions.

Editorial: The Australia Institute and Adani's Carmichael coal mine- Sharon Roy

http://www.theherald.com.au/story/4614716/criticism-of-adanis-carmichael-coal-mine/

Context- This text was created on the 24th of April 2017. It was created in response to the Australian Institute that questioned why the federal government should provide up to $1 billion in loan to fund the rail link to the Abbot Point coal-loader on the coast. Background knowledge between the projects and funding of the Australian and Indian government may be needed.

Argument- The piece of text’s overarching contention argues to open markets to support the funding for the rail line with the explanation that the ‘exclusive’ location of Carmichael mine coal would not have a detrimental effect on other Australian coal producers. The editor argues that when the government is asked to ‘subside’ they should consider that the government financing would ‘benefit a broader industry.’ They also point out that only ‘further technological breakthroughs’ would ‘depress coal prices.’

Purpose and Positioning- The author’s purpose is to position the reader to understand the benefits of the government loaning the money to the Adani group. Persuasive strategies such as supporting an argument with logic and evidence such as, ‘production level of 60 million tons a year.’ The author positions the audience by reasoning to understand the arguments and personal benefits through Australia’s economic growth.

Issues and Implications- The issue that is addressed in this text is that funding the Adani Group is a good economic decision as ‘indulging in protectionism... is only going to put the benefits of that growth at risk. The wider ramification is that what would depress coal prices is only through technological breakthroughs in renewable energy sources.

Text type- This text type is an editorial it has been chosen to provide the editor to provide their stance on this issue and their solution. Within this type of text, the audience can resonate and voice their opinion in the comment section.

Author and Audience- The author is not specifically stated and there may be more than one editor. They do have a vested interest on this issue, evident with the language that they showcase. The target audience are mainly the critics behind this project and the government that are faced with the decision.

Language Features- Language features such as evidence and research are evident and emotive language such as ‘depress’ for the audience to picture the situation juxtaposed with logic and reasoning. They have been chosen to influence the audience and position them to understand the many benefits as well as support the arguments.

Stakeholders- The main stakeholder is the Australian government that have the decision to either to fund or not fund the project with the taxpayer’s money. The people that may have a job opportunity are affected and the Aboriginal community whom should also have a say in this decision.

The Adani mine is the generation’s Franklin River. People power can stop it.’ – Bob Brown

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/mar/24/the-adani-mine-is-this-generations-franklin-river-people-power-can-stop-it

Context:

- This article was written on Friday 24th March 2017 at 6am AEDT and was published on ‘The Guardian’ in response to the construction of the Adani coal mine, once built one of the biggest export coalmines in the world, being built in central Queensland. To write on this issue, Brown would have had knowledge on the Adani issue and effects of it on the environment and people of Australia.

Arguments:

Cons

- It will be a repeat in history like the Franklin River campaign. We should stop the Adani coal mine like we stopped the Franklin River from being turned into a damn.

- It is an environmental issue that will effect the Great Barrier Reef that has been in danger for so long and will increase disastrous effects on the coral deaths. Will also contaminate the ground waters at Galilee Basin that will threaten endangered species even more.

- Increase global warming from burning fossil fuel and increases green house gas emission. The mine would send over 4.6 billion tonnes more carbon pollution into the Earth’s atmosphere.

- Kills people. Many people in Australia are dying from black lung disease and in the Adani corporation in India, more then 100,000 people die every year from burning fossil fuels.

- It will suck up billions of litres of ground and surface water each year.

- Reduce up to 67,000 jobs the reef sustains

- There are many people who support this issue, and together we can stop this

Pro

- It will be the biggest untouched coal reserve in the world

- The coal mine can help launch other projects

Purpose:

- The purpose of this opinion piece is to exhibit all the logical negative effects that the Adani coal mines will have on Australia and its environment and people. It also encourages people so consider the effects of the coal mine and work together to not give money to the project so that it can be stopped.

Positioning:

- The readers are positioned to see the logical aspects of why this project shouldn’t be passed. They are encouraged to consider the damages that can occur from the construction of the mine and to help campaign against it.

Issue:

- The issue this article talking about is the debate over the construction of the Adani coal mine in central Queensland which is asking for 1 billion dollars of taxpayers’ money for its construction.

- However there are many negative effects it will have on Australia including major environmental issues

Implication:

- Implications expected from the coal mines would be on the natural habitat of Australia such as the Great Barrier Reef and the wildlife

- The implications expected from this article is for people to logically consider the outcome from the construction of the huge coal mine in Queensland and to work together to campaign against it.

Text type: The text type used in this article is an opinion piece that has been used to exhibit the author’s opinion on the Adani mine project that has been of debate in Australia.

Author:

- The author of this piece is Bob Brown who is a former Australian politician, medical doctor and an environmentalist who was a Senator and former Parliamentary Leader of the Australian Greens. He would be interested in this issue as he is an environmentalist and the Adani mines would deeply effect the Australian environment.

Audience:

- The audience of this opinion piece would be the environmentalists who would be angered by this issue and citizens who would be effected by the construction of the coal mines

Language features:

- The language features present in this text are anecdotal stories such as the Franklin River one to encourage the audience to be a part of this movement, it also uses facts such as the amount of people dying and the 4.6 billion tonnes of carbon pollution. He also uses inclusive emotive language to guilt and persuade the audience into campaigning against the issue by stating ‘this is a issue of conscience’, ‘more than 100,000 people die of polluting effects of burning fossil fuels’. He also uses rhetorical questions such as ‘where were you and what did you do?’ to make the audience question their contribution to the issue.

Stakeholder:

- The stakeholders of this issue would be environmentalists who wish to protect not only Australia, but also the world, citizens of Australia who’s money will be used in the construction, the government- those for and against, Adani- who’s project this is.
