Introduction

1. Invite six students to the front of the classroom to participate in acting out the following word problem.
2. Read the following word problem: “It is the beginning of a new school year! Six students have one packet of 18 pencils. They want to share the pencils equally. How many pencils will each student get?”
3. Explain that to solve this problem, you must divide, or separate the pencils into equal groups, each with the same number of pencils.
4. Display 18 pencils and ask a different student to act as the “leader” and to distribute the pencils among the students.
5. Explain that together, you have just solved the division problem. You started with 18 pencils, and shared them equally between six students, proving that 18 divided by 6 is 3.
6. Write the equation on the board for all students to see:        18 ÷ 6 = 3

Teacher will get 20 pencils and ask the students - How many times can 4 be taken from 20?

She will demonstrate the same by taking 4 from 20 and giving it to a child, left with 16 pencils. 

Again taking 4 pencils from 16 and giving to another child left with 12 pencils. She will continue the same till she reaches 0. 

She will ask the class How many children got 4 pencils?

When she was taking away the pencils -What she was doing with given number (20 pencils)? Ans - Subtracting

How many times did we subtract?  5 times or 5 children got 4 pencils

So when we are sharing the same number of things i.e. 4 pencils out of total number of things i.e. 20 pencils again and again till we reach zero is called repeated subtraction. 

“Division is repeated subtraction”

She will demonstrate the same by showing it on the whiteboard.

Teacher will write the sum on the board ie. 20 ÷  2 = 10

She will draw : (Drawing is down)

 

In the division fact 1st number will be the dividend and next number will be divisor.

Dividend will be written inside (number of things to be divided) and divisor will be put outside (Number of things each child gets)

Students will say the table of 2 and stop at the number where the answer is 20 ie. 10 X 2 = 20

So, Dividend -  20

     Divisor  -   2

     Quotient - 10
